AS is customary in the weeks following every Olympic Games, many top swimmers are making announcements about continuing their careers, and Great Britain&#039;s Rebecca Adlington is certain her career will not run to the 2016 Rio Olympics.<\/p>\n<p>Adlington, the world record holder in the 800 long course freestyle, has not ruled out the chance of competing for one or two more years for Great Britain. In an article published today by the London Daily Mail, Adlington, now 23, said distance freestyle is &#8220;a young person&#039;s game. Do I want to carry on and not get any faster? The answer is No.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Adlington won two Olympic gold medals in the 400 and 800 freestyle in 2008, breaking Janet Evans&#039; longstanding world record in the longer event with an 8:14.10. In 2012, Adlington was unable to defend her title, finishing third and shedding tears on the medal podium in front of an adoring crowd.<\/p>\n<p>Adlington suggested in the Daily Mail article that the 800 free in London might have been her last competitive event, but said if she continues in the sport, it will only be until the 2014 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow and only in the 200 and 400 frees.<\/p>\n<p>Adlington is taking a vacation and participating in a charity ride in Africa with swimmers Ross Davenport, Joanne Jackson and Melanie Marshall in October.
