The United States Anti-Doping Agency (USADA) has announced that Olympian\u00a0Ryan Lochte<\/strong><\/a> will be suspended from all competition until July 2019, according to a report from\u00a0ESPN<\/i><\/a>.<\/p>\n

Lochte’s suspension stems from the usage of an intravenous infusion, which breaks anti-doping rules. While the 12-time Olympic medalist did not receive any banned substances through the IV, athletes are not supposed to receive any sort of IV unless they have been hospitalized or have filed for an exemption.<\/p>\n

The incident occurred in May when Lochte posted a photo of himself receiving an IV infusion. which prompted USADA to investigate. Since then, the image has been removed from social media.<\/p>\n

The investigation by USADA<\/a> discovered that Lochte had “received an intravenous infusion of permitted substances at an infusion clinic in a volume greater than 100 mL in a 12-hour period without a Therapeutic Use Exemption (TUE).”<\/p>\n

USADA’s press release continued their explanation by stating,<\/p>\n

“Intravenous infusions or injections in a volume greater than 100 mL within a 12-hour period are prohibited at all times – except for those legitimately received in the course of hospital treatment, surgical procedures, or clinical diagnostic investigations under the USADA Protocol for Olympic and Paralympic Movement Testing, the United States Olympic Committee National Anti-Doping Policies, and the Federation Internationale de Natation Anti-Doping Rules, all of which have adopted the World Anti-Doping Code and the World Anti-Doping Agency Prohibited List.”<\/strong><\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n

His suspension has been backdated to May 24th, 2018 and will continue until July 2019.<\/p>\n

Lochte was set to compete in four events this weekend at the 2018 Phillips 66 U.S. National Championships in Irvine, California. His suspension prevents him from qualifying for the 2018 Pan Pacific Championships, 2019 World Championships, and 2019 Pan American Championships.<\/p>\n

His suspension marks the second one for the American team as\u00a0Madisyn Cox<\/a>\u00a0<\/strong>was\u00a0suspended for two years<\/a>\u00a0by FINA for the consumption of trimetazidine just a few days ago.<\/p>\n

This also is not Lochte’s first suspension as he was suspended for 10 months<\/a> by USA Swimming after he filed a false police report in Rio claiming that he and three other teammates were robbed at gunpoint.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
