AFTER 40 years at the head of the Confederation of African Swimming, Mustapha Larfaoui has stepped down, replaced by South Africa&#039;s Sam Ramsamy, according to an article from Inside the Games.<\/p>\n<p>Ramsamy&#039;s election to the presidency, made last week during the African championships, moves him up from the vice presidency he had held at the Confederation of African Swimming. He&#039;s also one of the vice presidents for FINA, the world governing body of aquatic sports.<\/p>\n<p>Ramsamy has been one of South Africa&#039;s leaders in sport since the country was allowed to compete in the Olympics after apartheid was lifted. He became president of South Africa&#039;s Olympic committee in 1991, helping guide the country to the Olympics in 1992, the country&#039;s first time at the Games since 1960.<\/p>\n<p>Tunisia&#039;s Habib Rouatbi, Senegal&#039;s Mohammed Diop, Uganda&#039;s Donald Rukare and Angola&#039;s Lino Candido Laurenco were elected as CANA vice-presidents. Kenya&#039;s Ben Ekumbo was elected as the secretary and treasurer. <\/p>\n<p>Larfaoui, a native of Algeria, has been regarded as one of the most influential names in international swimming. He was president of FINA from 1988 to 2009, the first African to hold the position, and an executive member of the World Anti-Doping Agency.
