The only sports not approved at the time were the aquatic sports of swimming, diving, and artistic swimming.<\/p>\n<p>The underlying reason for the missing schedules were ongoing discussions between television networks in the United States and Japan, who each wanted finals to be aired at different times. The United States pushed for morning finals to enhance prime viewing hours, while Japan wanted to host finals in the evening stating that swimming was one of the country&#8217;s favorite Olympic sports.<\/p>\n<p>One day later, the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/fina-bureau-in-favor-of-morning-finals-at-2020-tokyo-olympics\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">FINA Bureau placed their support<\/a> behind holding the swimming finals in the morning hours in Japan, benefitting prime time viewing hours in the United States. The schedule echoes that of the 2008 Olympic Games in Beijing, China, where finals also took place in the morning.<\/p>\n<p>The broadcasting schedule largely benefits U.S. broadcaster NBC, who <a href=\"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/nbcuniversal-claims-sole-usa-broadcast-rights-for-olympic-games-through-2032\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">signed a deal with the IOC in 2014<\/a> for exclusive broadcasting rights through the 2032 Olympic Games.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Tsuyoshi Aoki<\/strong>, chairman for the Japanese Swimming Federation, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.japantimes.co.jp\/sports\/2018\/07\/19\/more-sports\/swimming\/jsf-chief-tsuyoshi-aoki-disappointed-2020-olympics-wont-showcase-swimming-finals-prime-time\/#.W1Ir8S2ZPBI\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">expressed disappointment over the decision<\/a>, explaining,<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"color: #008080;\">&#8220;Unfortunately, it is what it is. We wanted to show the Japanese fans the swimming finals in Japanese prime time.&#8221;<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>While the schedule still has not been officially confirmed by the IOC or the Tokyo 2020 organizing committee, many in the swimming community are not surprised to hear that morning finals might take place.<\/p>\n<p>Australian Olympian\u00a0<strong>Cate Campbell<\/strong> has <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailyliberal.com.au\/story\/5538964\/campbell-takes-aim-at-fina-over-am-finals\/?cs=4783\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">spoken out about the decision<\/a> to host finals in the morning, stating,<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"color: #008080;\">&#8220;It&#8217;s not unexpected but I&#8217;m a little disappointed that the rights of the athletes are not being considered or there has not been athlete or coach consultation.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #008080;\">I have done this before (raced morning finals) in 2008 in Beijing at my first Olympic Games so it&#8217;s nothing new.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #008080;\">I think it will be a lot easier than swimming in a midnight final like we did in Rio, so it&#8217;s not something that&#8217;s worrying or concerning.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #008080;\">We have a no excuses policy on this team and it&#8217;s just another challenge for us to take and as I said while it is disappointing it&#8217;s not unexpected.&#8221;<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><em>Read more from <a href=\"http:\/\/aroundtherings.com\/site\/A__64078\/Title__IOC-FINA-Approve-Timing-of-Tokyo-2020-Swimming-Finals\/utm_source__hootsuite\/utm_medium__\/utm_term__\/utm_content__\/utm_campaign__\/292\/Articles\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Around the Rings<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/article\/us-olympics-2020-swimming\/japan-swimming-gets-sinking-feeling-over-morning-finals-idUSKBN1KA0N9\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Reuters<\/a>.\u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Two days ago the International Olympic Committee (IOC) approved an almost complete schedule of the Olympic events for the 2020 Tokyo Olympic Games.
