Day one of the 2018 Speedo Sectionals at Iowa City is shaping up to be a collegiate showdown in the team race, with many swimmers from major Division I programs populating the A-Finals of every event.<\/p>\n

Despite the representation of many elite schools, the University of Kentucky men and the University of Minnesota women established themselves as the most dominant teams on day one.<\/p>\n

DAY ONE FINAL RESULTS<\/a><\/p>\n

Women’s 100 Free<\/h2>\n

After coming out of this morning’s prelims seeded first, rising sophomore at the University of Iowa\u00a0Sarah Schemmel\u00a0<\/strong>led the race from start to finish in a final time of 57.04.<\/p>\n

Schemmel was followed closely by Malorie Han<\/strong> of Northwestern University, who took second with a 57.39. 15-year old Mckenna Stone<\/strong>\u00a0from Fox Valley Swim Club posted a 57.43 for third, making her the only non-collegiate swimmer to crack 58 in the finals.<\/p>\n

University of Kentucky’s Riley Gaines\u00a0<\/strong>(57.51), Ames Cyclone’s\u00a0Sophia Sorenson\u00a0<\/strong>(58.17),\u00a0Elmbrook’s\u00a0Kaylyn Schoof<\/strong> (58.19), and Delta Aquatics’s\u00a0Jessica Davis<\/strong> make up tonight’s A-Final.<\/p>\n

14 year old\u00a0Reilly Tiltmann<\/strong> of Elmbrook Swim Club, who finished third in this morning’s prelims, was disqualified.<\/p>\n

Men’s 100 Free<\/h2>\n

University of Kentucky junior\u00a0Jason Head<\/strong> dominated the men’s 100 free, netting the win with a 50.46, the only swimmer in the field under 51.<\/p>\n

The Wildcats punched in a 1-2 finish with Kentucky teammate John Mitchell<\/strong> out-touching Wisconsin junior Cameron Tysoe<\/strong>, 51.02 to 51.16.<\/p>\n

University of Kentucky’s\u00a0Shane Anderson\u00a0<\/strong>(51.50), University of Iowa’s\u00a0Joseph Myhre<\/strong> (51.60), Kentucky’s\u00a0Peter Wetzlar\u00a0<\/strong>(51.66), Elmbrook’s Michael Linnihan\u00a0<\/strong>(51.79) and Iowa’s\u00a0William Scott\u00a0<\/strong>(52.06) complete tonight’s A-Final.<\/p>\n

Women’s 200 Breaststroke<\/h2>\n

The Minnesota women go 1-2 in the Women’s 200m Breaststroke, with fellow seniors\u00a0Kaela Marcus\u00a0<\/strong>and\u00a0Nicky Ciavarella<\/strong> finishing virtually together in 2:36.57 and 2:36.86 respectively. The two Golden Gophers had almost identical splits.<\/p>\n

Denying the Gophers a 1-2-3 finish was WEST Swim Club’s\u00a0Sylvia Kobylak<\/strong>. The 16 year old touched for 3rd in 2:37.74, nearly a second ahead of Minnesota’s\u00a0Olivia Johnston\u00a0<\/strong>(2:38.68).<\/p>\n

University of Kentucky’s\u00a0Elizabeth Merriman\u00a0<\/strong>(2:39.23),\u00a0Badger Aquatic Club’s\u00a0Alexandra Anagnostopoulos\u00a0<\/strong>(2:39.41) and Minnesota’s\u00a0Alexandra Preiss\u00a0<\/strong>(2:41.54) round off the top eight.<\/p>\n

Northwestern’s Emma Hruby<\/strong>, who was seeded first heading into tonight’s finals, was disqualified.<\/p>\n

Men’s 200 Breaststroke<\/h2>\n

University of Iowa’s Tanner Nelson<\/strong> won the Men’s 200m Breaststroke all the way from lane 7 with a swift 2:17.70, dropping almost four seconds off of his seed time. The outside smoke pushed his way ahead of the field on the second 50 – where he was the only member of the field to split under a 35 – and never looked back.<\/p>\n

University of Kentucky’s Kyle Barker<\/strong> had the fastest second 100 of the field, which allowed him to claw back into second with a 2:18.33. Following Barker was Minnesota’s\u00a0Brenner Hohenstein\u00a0<\/strong>in 2:18.66, the only other swimmer in the final to break 2:20.<\/p>\n

Also in tonight’s A-Final was Wisconsin’s\u00a0Chris Willis\u00a0<\/strong>(2:20.04) and\u00a0Benjamin Attenberger<\/strong> (2:21.16), Hickory Willow’s\u00a0Lucas Smiarowski\u00a0<\/strong>(2:22.89), Unattached-Iowa’s\u00a0Caleb Babb<\/strong> (2:23.47) and Minnesota’s\u00a0Evan Yoder<\/strong> (2:23.75).<\/p>\n

Women’s 200 Butterfly<\/h2>\n

Rising Kentucky Sophomore\u00a0Riley Gaines<\/strong> took it out fast and held on all the way to the wall, touching first in 2:16.55, good for a two second drop off of her seed time.<\/p>\n

Coming in second was Green Bay Swim Club’s\u00a0Emma Lasecki\u00a0<\/strong>with a 2:17.62. Iowa’s\u00a0Kelsey Drake<\/strong>, who had the fastest time coming into the meet, came in third with a 2:18.06.<\/p>\n

Rounding out the top eight was Elmbrook’s\u00a0Kaylyn Schoof\u00a0<\/strong>(2:19.92), Riptide Swim Team’s\u00a0Lucia Rizzo<\/strong>\u00a0(2:20.26)\u00a0and\u00a0Winter Craig<\/strong> (2:21.08), Madison Aquatic Club’s\u00a0Katrina Marty<\/strong> (2:21.99)<\/p>\n

Fox Valley’s\u00a0Kayleigh Cannon<\/strong>, who finished prelims in 6th place, was disqualified.<\/p>\n

Men’s 200 Butterfly<\/h2>\n

The Kentucky Wildcats are on a roll tonight, and\u00a0Daniel Orcutt<\/strong>‘s<\/strong> 200 fly victory was the perfect way to cap off their night. The Kentucky Sophomore was absolutely dominant, winning by over three seconds in 2:01.42.<\/p>\n

Coming in second was\u00a0Elmbrook’s\u00a0Michael Linnihan<\/strong>, sporting almost a nine second drop from his entry time after swimming the 100 free earlier in this session. WEST Swim Club’s\u00a0Jeffrey Vitek<\/strong> almost kept it close with Orcutt through the first 100, but eventually faded to third, posting a 2:05.63.<\/p>\n

Fox Valley’s\u00a0Aayush Deshpande\u00a0<\/strong>(2:05.79), Saint Charles’s\u00a0Frank Niziolek<\/strong> (2:06.26), Aligator Aquatics’s\u00a0Michael Balcerak<\/strong> (2:07.00),\u00a0Wildkit’s\u00a0Mark Auger\u00a0<\/strong>(2:07.00) and Fox Valley’s\u00a0Michael Schwers\u00a0<\/strong>(2:08.27) also were represented in the A-Final.<\/p>\n

Women’s 800 Free<\/h2>\n

Consistency was the name of the game in the Women’s 800m free, as Abbey Erwin cranked out 1:07s after 1:07s to dominate the event in 8:52.69. University of Kentucky’s\u00a0Payton Neff<\/strong> was Erwin’s closest competitor, as she finished second with a 8:58.84. Rounding out the podium was\u00a0Lakeside Aquatic Club’s\u00a0Bryn Handley<\/strong>, who touched for third in 8:58.84.<\/p>\n

The Barrington Swim Club distance troupe had a great showing in the women’s 800 free, boasting three top eight finishes with\u00a0Maggie Graves\u00a0<\/strong>in fourth (9:00.59),\u00a0Jane<\/strong> Smith in fifth\u00a0(9:03.63), and\u00a0Jennifer Tokarz<\/strong> in seventh (9:08.22). Another Barrington swimmer,\u00a0Bridget O’Leary<\/strong>, narrowly missed the top eight, swimming a 9:11.48 to take ninth.<\/p>\n

The rest of the top eight includes Riptide Swim Team’s\u00a0Katia Soudakova<\/strong> (9:04.70) who came in sixth, and\u00a0University of Minnesota’s\u00a0Olivia Johnston\u00a0<\/strong>(9:10.69) who came in eighth.<\/p>\n

Men’s 800 Free<\/h2>\n

It seemed that outside smoke\u00a0Nicholas Smith<\/strong> of the Kentucky Wildcats was going to run away with the win at the halfway mark, flipping nearly six seconds ahead of his nearest competition. Two Minnesota Gophers, however, ended up running Smith down in the back-half, setting up a photo finish on the last 50.<\/p>\n

The Gophers ended up narrowly clinching the 1-2 finish, with\u00a0Michael Messner<\/strong>\u00a0taking first in 8:19.69 followed by\u00a0teammate\u00a0Nicholas Pachinski\u00a0<\/strong>in 8:19.72. Smith ended up barely settling for third with a 8:19.90.<\/p>\n

The other swimmers in the top eight were Unattached-Iowa’s\u00a0Tom Schab<\/strong> (8:22.93), Badger Aquatic Club’s\u00a0Ben McDade<\/strong> (8:25.69), Unattached-Minnesota’s\u00a0Matt Hedman<\/strong>, Dubuque Hurricane’s\u00a0Benjamin Colin\u00a0<\/strong>(8:27.58), and Riptide Swim Team’s\u00a0Timothy\u00a0<\/strong>(8:31.91).<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
