{"id":319477,"date":"2018-07-18T10:05:42","date_gmt":"2018-07-18T17:05:42","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/?p=319477"},"modified":"2018-07-18T10:05:42","modified_gmt":"2018-07-18T17:05:42","slug":"david-berkhoff-elected-to-philadelphia-sports-hall-of-fame","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/david-berkhoff-elected-to-philadelphia-sports-hall-of-fame\/","title":{"rendered":"David Berkhoff Elected to Philadelphia Sports Hall of Fame"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>A talented class of 15 was elected into the Philadelphia Sports Hall of Fame on Tuesday and will be inducted this fall.<\/p>\n<p>Among the familiar names like basketball star <strong>Allen Iverson<\/strong>, pitcher <strong>Jamie Moyer<\/strong>, Negro Leagues Hall of Famer <strong>Louis Santop<\/strong> and pioneering sports writer <strong>Claire Smith<\/strong>, Olympic gold medal swimmer <strong>David Berkoff<\/strong> was selected.<\/p>\n<p>Berkoff changed the world of swimming when he introduced his \u201cBerkoff Blastoff\u201d \u2014 a new way to speed off the starting blocks \u2014 as a backstroker in the 1980s. His start kept him under the water for 35-40 yards or meters.<\/p>\n<p>He attended Penn Charter and moved to Harvard, where he won several Ivy League championships and was the 1987 and 1989 NCAA champion in the 100-yard backstroke.<\/p>\n<p>He won two gold medals as part of relay teams in the 1988 and 1992 Olympics, as well as a silver medal in 1988 and a bronze in 1992, both in the 100-meter backstroke.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>A talented class of 15 was elected into the Philadelphia Sports Hall of Fame on Tuesday and will be inducted this fall.
