At the opening press event, held on the top of the Montjuic,\u00a0LEN President <strong>Paolo Barelli<\/strong> declared that this was going to be greatest water polo\u00a0show of the whole year.<\/p>\n<p>Though the water polo European Championships return to Barcelona after 48 years (in\u00a01970 it was held together with the other aquatic disciplines), the city was busy during\u00a0this almost half century with staging major aquatic events. The 1992 Olympic Games\u00a0stand out just as the 2003 and 2013 editions of the FINA World Championships. Title-holder Hungary\u2019s boss <strong>Attila Biro<\/strong> said that\u00a0even if only six players remained from the gold-medal winning side from Belgrade\u00a02016, they were determined to reach the semi-finals again.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"color: #008080;\">\u201cThis is a young team with\u00a0a lot of talented players which has all the potential needed to be successful. However,\u00a0in today\u2019s water polo you cannot take anything for granted as the top six teams are\u00a0really on the same level. Anyway, we want to reach the best four and from that point\u00a0anything is possible.\u201d<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Host Spain was champion in 2014 and silver-medallist at the 2017 Worlds but\u00a0moreover they won the gold in the Picornell pool at the 2013 World Championships.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"color: #008080;\">\u201cIt\u2019s a great memory and we would love to repeat it but as Attila (Biro) said this field is\u00a0extremely balanced, among the top six sides anyone could claim the title\u201d head coach\u00a0<strong>Miguel Oca<\/strong> said. \u201cOur team worked really hard during the last weeks and the players\u00a0are ready to do their best.\u201d<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Thanks to the draw, the opening day already features a big game between these two\u00a0sides. Ahead of the Spain v Hungary contest, the players think it can be anybody\u2019s\u00a0match. \u201cThough our team is new and we are in the middle of a building process, I think\u00a0we can show our strength on the opening day\u201d Hungary\u2019s <strong>Anna Illes<\/strong> said (she played\u00a0for the 2016 champion side).<\/p>\n<p>Spain\u2019s <strong>Anni Espar<\/strong> \u2013 was a member of the world title winning team five years ago \u2013 also\u00a0highlighted how balanced the field was.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"color: #008080;\">\u201cWe are ready to go for the title just like we\u00a0do every time. We will face a very strong Hungarian team on Saturday evening and\u00a0there will be a series of tough matches as the best six teams are on the same high\u00a0level. We will do our best and will see if it\u2019s enough to make the top.\u201d<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>For the second time, the water polo Europeans will feature 16 men and 12 women\u00a0teams. Serbian men and Hungarian women start the tourney as title-holders, however,\u00a0since their 2016 triumphs other sides also achieved big successes. Croatian men\u00a0became world champion in 2017 and added the LEN Europa Cup gold to their treasury\u00a0this April but later Montenegro (runner-up in Belgrade 2016) won the World League\u00a0Super Final to sign up for the title-contenders\u2019 list in Barcelona.<\/p>\n<p>Among the women, Spain finished as the best European in last summer at the Worlds\u00a0(beaten by the US in the final) while Greece clinched the women Europa Cup this\u00a0spring and the Netherlands went almost all the way in the World League before\u00a0succumbing to the mighty Americans in the final.<\/p>\n<p>LEN offers free live streaming from each and every match on its <a href=\"http:\/\/www.len.eu\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">website<\/a>,\u00a0though geoblocking might occur in some countries when the right-holder broadcaster\u00a0televise a given encounter.
