INTERNATIONAL Olympic Committee President Jacques Rogge will have hip replacement surgery later this week, causing him to miss several crucial events at the Paralympic Games, as reported by the Olympic-based website Inside the Games. The surgery, which is stated as &#8220;routine&#8221; for the 70-year-old, will keep Rogge in the hospital for several days. <\/p>\n<p>The consequence of his surgery is that he will miss the Paralympic Closing Ceremonies this Sunday, September 9. The event is promoted as a conclusion to the entire Olympic events, not just the Paralympic portion. <\/p>\n<p>Rogge will also miss an event held to mark the 40th anniversary of the 1972 Munich Olympic massacre. Held tomorrow, the German event will honor the 11 victims that were taken hostage and then killed by a radical Palestinian group at the Munich Summer Games. It will take place at the Fuerstenfeldbruck air base just outside of Munich. <\/p>\n<p>Rogge was initially elected president of the IOC in July 2001, then re-elected in October of 2009.
