AUSTIN, Texas, Jan. 5. THE No. 5 University of Texas women's swimming team returned to action after the holiday break on Saturday morning, Jan. 5, as the Orange squad got past the White team, 114-112, during the intra-squad Orange-White meet at the Lee and Joe Jamail Texas Swimming Center in Austin.<\/p>\n
The Orange squad needed a win in the final race of the morning to ensure the victory, capturing first in the 200 freestyle relay to clinch the win. The relay team of senior-transfer Lauren Thies (Portland, Ore.\/
\nLincoln\/Stanford), sophomore-transfer Jenna Bridges
\n(Tallahassee, Fla.\/Bolles School\/Virginia), freshman Michelle Molina (Paradise Valley, Ariz.\/Chaparral) and junior Erin Phenix (Cincinnati, Ohio\/Ursuline) led the way with a time of 1:34.28. They were followed in second (1:34.33) by the White relay team of freshman
\nSarah Wanazek (Brookfield, Wis.), sophomore Martha Guleke (Austin, Texas), senior Kelley Robins (Houston, Texas) and sophomore-transfer Lacey Elliott (El Paso, Texas\/Franklin\/SMU). <\/p>\n
All together, a total of four swimmers were double-event winners during the meet. Freshman Kaela Humphries (Chaska, Minn.\/Eden Prairie) took control of the backstroke events, finishing first in both the 100 (57.64) and 200 back (2:03.67). <\/p>\n
In butterfly, Wanazek paced the field with victories in the 100 fly (57.08) and the 200 fly (2:05.54). <\/p>\n
Junior Tanica Jamison (Dublin, Calif.\/Dublin) led the way in both the 100 and 200 freestyle, winning the 200 free in 1:50.01 and the 100 in 50.60, while freshman Alisa Schuknecht (Bend, Ore.\/Bend) won the 200 IM (2:05.96) and the 200 breaststroke (2:19.87). <\/p>\n
Junior Ashlee Fotinakes (Marietta, Ga.\/Lassiter) put together a personal-best performance in the 100 breaststroke, touching first in 1:05.55.<\/p>\n
"We were really happy just to be able to get the team back in the pool and swimming in a competitive meet atmosphere," co-head coach Mike Walker said. "There was some great racing today.
