Glad you are here. <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/PSJyshbZA8\">https:\/\/t.co\/PSJyshbZA8<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/hashtag\/GoLopers?src=hash&amp;ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">#GoLopers<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u2014 UNK Athletics (@UNK_Athletics) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/UNK_Athletics\/status\/1017113170467573780?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">July 11, 2018<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><script async src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script><\/p>\n<p>A longtime teacher and youth swimming coach in the Kearney community, O&#8217;Connell replaces <strong>Rebecca Tidwell<\/strong> who resigned in the spring. O&#8217;Connell becomes just the sixth head coach in the program&#8217;s 57-year history, following <strong>Harriet Yingling<\/strong> (1962), <strong>Gene Beck<\/strong> (1963-1966), <strong>Joan Bailey<\/strong> (1967-1996), <strong>Teresa Osmanski<\/strong> (1997-2016) and Tidwell (2017-2018).<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;I am thrilled and honored to announce that Becky O&#8217;Connell has been named the new head coach for the UNK Women&#8217;s Swimming and Diving Team.\u00a0 Anyone who knows swimming in Nebraska knows Coach O&#8217;Connell,&#8221; said Bauer. &#8220;Aside from Becky&#8217;s wealth of coaching experience, she is an accomplished classroom teacher who understands and values the pursuit of academic achievement and the commitment it takes to balance the demands of being a student-athlete.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>O&#8217;Connell was a third grade teacher at Windy Hills Elementary for 36 years. Holding an undergraduate degree from UNL in teaching and a Mater&#8217;s Guidance and Counseling from UNK, she was head swimming and diving coach at Kearney High School for 16 years. Over 25 of her student-athletes went on to compete at the varsity college level with many others taking part in college club swim teams.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"color: #000080;\">&#8220;I&#8217;m excited to become a part of the Loper family. Swimming and diving in Kearney has been a\u00a0passion of mine for a long time. I cannot think of a better way for me to share my love of the sport\u00a0with the community than to help athletes achieve their goals through Loper Swimming and Diving,&#8221; said O&#8217;Connell.<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>For 20 years O&#8217;Connell has been involved with the Greater Nebraska Swim Team (GNST), serving as head coach of the Kearney squad and being an assistant at major events like Sectionals and the Omaha Cup. This allowed her to work with, and be on deck with, elite swimmers and pre-Olympians.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Becky is passionate about swimming and diving and will bring a high level of energy and commitment to increasing our team&#8217;s level of competitiveness. She is eager to grow the program by increasing the roster size and developing both the swimming and diving disciplines,&#8221; said Bauer.<\/p>\n<p>UNK is a member of the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference (RMAC) in women&#8217;s swimming and diving.\u00a0The league will consist of nine\u00a0schools for the upcoming 2018-19 season. The 2019 RMAC Championships are set for February 13-16 in Lewisville, Texas.<\/p>\n<p>The Aqualopers begin practicing this fall with the regular season opener set for Saturday, November 3, vs. the College of Saint Mary.
