ELEVEN reigning or former NCAA champions will compete in Kazan, Russia, next summer at the 2013 World University Games, USA Swimming announced in its release of the official roster today.<\/p>\n<p>On the women&#039;s side, four of those on the roster won individual races at the 2012 NCAA Division I championships: Liv Jensen (50 free), Megan Romano (200 free), Stephanie Peacock (1650 free) and Cindy Tran (100 back). Melanie Margalis previously helped Georgia win the 400 free relay in 2011.<\/p>\n<p>On the men&#039;s side, Kevin Cordes and Cory Chitwood, both representing Arizona, are the only reigning individual collegiate champions on the WUG roster. Cordes won the 100 breast in March and also set the American record in the prelims of the event with a 51.32. Chitwood won his third-straight title in the 200 backstroke in 2012. Adam Small, also swimming for the Wildcats, anchored the American record-setting 200 medley relay in March.<\/p>\n<p>Michael McBroom was the NCAA champion in the 1650 freestyle in 2011, and his Texas teammate Austin Surhoff won the 200 IM at the 2010 NCAAs. Mike Alexandrov, the former American record holder in the 100-yard breast, won that event in 2007.<\/p>\n<p>Only four other current collegiate swimmers on the squad have not earned All-America status. Andrea Kropp, who has transferred to the University of Southern California after one season at Princeton. She has not yet qualified for an NCAA championships but shows promise in her first season with the Trojans after swimming in the finals of the Olympic Trials in the 200 breast. Emily McClellan placed as high as 18th at the NCAAs for the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee, the school&#039;s highest placing at the championships. BJ Johnson, who is having a career resurgence after ending his collegiate career at Stanford in 2009, competed in the NCAAs but never got a second swim.
