Steve and I had the opportunity to work together at West Virginia University and build a team in less than three years that won Big East Championship and was Top 20 in the country. I felt fortunate when he expressed interest in coming to Blacksburg so we could work together again. Steve is a very intelligent and smart coach and a top recruiter, he will work relentlessly for the team, the student-athletes and Virginia Tech. I am so happy to welcome he and his wife Abby to the Hokie Family and to swimming and diving coaching staff.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Steketee reunites with Lopez Miro after having served as an assistant on Lopez Miro&#8217;s staff at WVU 2004-07. The two were instrumental in improving the Mountaineers&#8217; women from 11th to third in the Big East while taking the men from seventh to first. In their final season, Steketee and Lopez Miro pushed the men&#8217;s team to a top-20 finish at NCAAs.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"color: #ff6600;\">&#8220;I am very excited to join Sergio Lopez Miro&#8217;s staff as he builds something special with Virginia Tech Swimming and Diving,&#8221; said Steketee. &#8220;I feel honored that Coach Lopez Miro and the administration have given me this opportunity and I cannot wait to get to work!&#8221;<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Most recently, Steketee was a volunteer assistant at Northwestern with the women&#8217;s swimming and diving program, helping to coach 2016 Olympian <strong>Valerie Gruest<\/strong> and NCAA Champion diver <strong>Olivia Rosendahl<\/strong>. Prior to Northwestern, Steketee was an assistant at Nevada where he helped the Wolfpack to a third place finish at the Mountain West Championships, its highest ever, and a 33rd place finish at NCAAs.<\/p>\n<p>Steketee served as an assistant at University of South Carolina from 2008-2013 where he coached swimmers that competed in multiple US National Champmionship meets as well as the 2008 Olympic trials and 2009 World Championships.<\/p>\n<p>A former BigTen Champion in the 200 free at Northwestern, Steketee also competed in the 2000 US Olympic trials, recording a top-20 finish in the 200 free. While competing for the Wildcats, he simultaneously held the program records in the 50, 100 and 200 free as well as five relay events.<\/p>\n<p>He began his career at Denver, serving as an assistant for the 2003-04 season.<\/p>\n<p>Steketee graduated from Northwestern with a BA in Political Science and Philosophy in 2001.
