{"id":317422,"date":"2018-07-06T09:53:10","date_gmt":"2018-07-06T16:53:10","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/?p=317422"},"modified":"2018-07-06T09:53:10","modified_gmt":"2018-07-06T16:53:10","slug":"new-zealand-names-teams-for-pan-pacs-junior-pan-pacs-youth-olympic-games","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/new-zealand-names-teams-for-pan-pacs-junior-pan-pacs-youth-olympic-games\/","title":{"rendered":"New Zealand Names Teams for Pan Pacs, Junior Pan Pacs &#038; Youth Olympic Games"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><em>By Dave Crampton, Swimming World Contributor.\u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Swimming New Zealand has named a small team to contest next month\u2019s Pan Pacific championships in Tokyo from August 9-13.\u00a0 Four years ago, 16 were selected, and 14 in 2010.<\/p>\n<p>That has reduced to five this year.<\/p>\n<p>Gold Coast Commonwealth Games bronze medallist <strong>Lewis Clareburt<\/strong> leads the team, after making finals in all his events at the 2016 Junior Pan Pacific championships. <strong>Emma Robinson<\/strong>, who easily qualified for the 800m and 1500m at this week\u2019s New Zealand Open championships, is the sole female to contest pool events. She returns from the 2010 team.<\/p>\n<p>Clareburt alongside 50m and 100m New Zealand freestyle record holder <strong>Daniel Hunter<\/strong> gained automatic selection into the squad after achieving qualification standards on the Gold Coast. \u00a0Hunter\u2019s 50m freestyle effort of 22.32 dipped under the 22.47 qualifying standard.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Matthew Scott<\/strong> and <strong>Charlotte Webby<\/strong> will compete in the men\u2019s and women\u2019s 10km open water race in Tokyo.\u00a0 Webby was also in the 2010 team.<\/p>\n<p>Medley swimmer <strong>Bradlee Ashby<\/strong> also achieved the qualification standard at the Commonwealth Games but has withdrawn from the squad due to injury and illness. Photo: Simon Watts\/www.bwmedia.co.nz\" width=\"700\" height=\"500\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-317426\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Youth Olympic Team &#8211; Photo Courtesy: Simon Watts\/www.bwmedia.co.nz<\/p><\/div>\n<p>New Zealand also intends to send four athletes to the Youth Olympic Games in Argentina in October.\u00a0 Freestylers <strong>Erika Fairweather<\/strong>, 14, <strong>Michael Pickett<\/strong>, 15 and <strong>Zac Reid<\/strong>, all who set multiple age group records at this week\u2019s New Zealand Open championships will be nominated to the New Zealand Olympic Committee, as will backstroker <strong>Gina Galloway<\/strong>. The coach will be <strong>Sue Southgate<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>The Buenos Aires Youth Olympic Games are being held from <span data-term=\"goog_577886984\">October 6-18<\/span>, where 32 sports compete over 10 days in the Argentinian capital.<\/p>\n<p>Eighteen athletes, including the four nominated for the Youth Olympics, will attend the Junior Pan Pacific Championships held next month in Fiji, from August 23 -26.
