We are not showing any evidence that we are going to win medals\u00a0in 2020,\u201d the federations\u2019s recently appointed targeted athlete and coach development\u00a0manager Gary Francis told Newshub, a New Zealand nationwide television station.<\/strong><\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>While freestyler<strong> Lauren Boyle<\/strong> has set a short course world record in recent years, New\u00a0Zealand hasn\u2019t had an Olympic medal since Atlanta 22 years ago, when <strong>Danyon Loader<\/strong> did\u00a0it twice.<\/p>\n<p>As a result of the drought, Swimming New Zealand\u2019s funding has halved over the past eight\u00a0years or so, with a third of its high performance funding removed by High Performance Sport\u00a0New Zealand after unrealistic targets were set prior to the Rio Olympics and no New\u00a0Zealanders made finals.<\/p>\n<p>The federation\u2019s head coach, American <strong>Jerry Olszewski<\/strong>, resigned last September, after just\u00a0a year in the job, citing personal reasons. But swimming insiders privately criticised his\u00a0performance and appointment &#8211; and the federation\u2019s chief executive also acknowledge risks\u00a0in his appointment.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;It&#8217;s always a risk when a sport in New Zealand brings in an international coach that at some\u00a0point they&#8221;ll want to head back,\u201d <strong>Steve Johns<\/strong> said. Results at the Gold Coast Commonwealth Games were the equal worst in the federation\u2019s\u00a0history, after most athletes were selected through relay qualification. The sole shining light\u00a0was <strong>Lewis<\/strong> <strong>Clareburt\u2019s<\/strong> bronze medal in the 400m IM \u2013 and he was selected after falling just\u00a0short of the qualifying standard set by New Zealand sports authorities.<\/p>\n<p>Clareburt is the one tracking towards top eight in 2020.<\/p>\n<p>The federation is not hiring a replacement head coach from within its own ranks either,\u00a0revamping its strategy to permit top swimmers to train with their home coaches, instead of in\u00a0a centralised high performance environment which wasn\u2019t really delivering high\u00a0performance.<\/p>\n<p>That\u2019s exactly what Clareburt, and young sprinter <strong>Michael Pickett<\/strong>, 15, who is approaching a\u00a0sub 50 second 100m freestyle time, have been doing.<\/p>\n<p>Clareburt trains in his home town in Wellington, New Zealand\u2019s capital city, with <strong>Gary\u00a0Hollywood<\/strong>, who is on the coaching team to next month\u2019s Pan Pacific championships. Pickett\u00a0trains with <strong>John Gatfield<\/strong>, a New Zealander, at top Australian club St Peter\u2019s Western, a club\u00a0that would have come third in the medal tally at the Commonwealth Games if they were a\u00a0sports federation.<\/p>\n<p>Francis says he is hoping that his top athletes are knocking on the door to win medals, but\u00a0currently they are not even making Olympic finals \u2013 some weren\u2019t even making semi-finals.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"color: #800080;\"><strong>\u201cWe can\u2019t keep sending swimmers and not have them make semi-finals,\u201d he said \u201cWe`re no\u00a0longer carrying passengers \u2013 everybody is got to be in the front seat and driving.\u201d<\/strong><\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Swimming New Zealand will be naming its Pan Pacific team after the New Zealand Open\u00a0championships this week. To date just <strong>Emma Robinson<\/strong> has qualified in the 800m at opens,\u00a0with Clareburt, backstroker <strong>Corey Main<\/strong> and sprinter <strong>Daniel Hunter<\/strong> meeting the qualifying\u00a0times at the Commonwealth Games and available for selection.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Bradlee Ashby<\/strong>, who also qualified at the Commonwealth Games, is out with injury.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>By Dave Crampton, Swimming World Contributor.
