Certain athletes are vying for positions on national teams, while others are competing for the potential to claim a coveted title. Either way, a handful of swimmers are primed to beat their long-standing rivals. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Indeed, the sensation of out-touching the opposition &#8211; of solidifying one\u2019s superior status &#8211; acts a source of intrinsic motivation for many. In the words of President Richard Nixon: \u201cI don\u2019t know anything that builds the will to win better than competitive sports.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<h2>Battles in the Pool<\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">For the fervent spectator, these illustrious rivalries are at the heart of the sport. They create a mixture of exhilaration and competitiveness, sending entire fan bases and journalists into frenzies. After all, how can we forget the epic <strong>Michael<\/strong>\u00a0<\/span><b>Phelps versus<\/b> <strong>Ryan<\/strong>\u00a0<b>Lochte<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> or <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><b>Gary Hall Jr. <\/b><strong>versus Alexander Popov<\/strong><\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0showdowns? <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Moving forward from these past show-downs, let&#8217;s hone in on swimming\u2019s most recent heated rivalries. <\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>#4. These two teams have been butting heads since the sport\u2019s inception, putting up some thrilling races. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">At the 2016 Rio Olympics, the Aussies captured only one of six relay titles \u2013 the women\u2019s 4&#215;100 LCM freestyle \u2013 in a nail-biting 3:33.14. Team USA\u2019s quartet fought back with an American Record at the 2017 World Championships, only to be dethroned by the Aussies&#8217; 3:30.05 world record at the 2018 Commonwealth Games. With emerging talent such as <\/span><b>Kyle Chambers, Ariarne Titmus\u00a0<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">and <\/span><b>Shayna<\/b> <b>Jack<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> contending for relay positions, America\u2019s dominance could be conceivably challenged for years to come.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>#3. As of 2015, Peaty has reigned victorious in all four major international meets \u2013 the Olympic Games, World Championships, European Championships and Commonwealth Games \u2013 becoming one of only three British swimmers to do so. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Van der Burgh has an equally admirable track record, amassing 16 total World Championship medals and two Olympic medals as early as 2012. The pair have battled it out since the 2014 Commonwealth Games, when van der Burgh narrowly grabbed the gold with a record-breaking 26.78, just 0.02 ahead of Peaty. Thereafter, the gold has almost exclusively rested with Peaty. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">At the 2018 Commonwealth Games, the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/cameron-van-der-burgh-out-swims-adam-peaty-in-50-breast\/\">South African swimmer finally terminated the Englishman\u2019s four-year winning streak<\/a> in the 50 LCM breaststroke. \u201cIt\u2019s probably one of the worst-feeling races I\u2019ve ever done,\u201d laments Peaty, who experienced his first major international setback. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Van der Burgh remains a force to be reckoned with. At 29 years old, the incumbent 50 SCM and 100 SCM world record holder retains the second-fastest position in the 50 LCM breaststroke of 2018, falling 0.17 short of his rival. The 2020 Tokyo Olympics &#8211; the last for soon-to-retire van der Burgh &#8211; could bring a host of surprises. Will history be rewritten?<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>#2. Horton first sledged Yang at the 2016 Rio Olympics, branding him as a \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/sun-yang-doping-case\/\">drug cheat<\/a>\u201d before clinching 400 LCM freestyle gold by 0.38 seconds. This followed Yang\u2019s three-month ban for the stimulant trimetazidine, which he claimed had been prescribed for an alleged heart condition. Yang\u2019s fanbase responded with a preemptive attack on Horton\u2019s social media posts, which purportedly garnered over <a href=\"http:\/\/www.dailymail.co.uk\/news\/article-3755548\/Mack-Horton-recieved-500-000-hate-message-China-calling-Rio-Olympic-rival-Sun-Yang-drug-cheat.html\">500,000 hate comments<\/a> during the Games. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Few have been sympathetic to the Chinese athlete\u2019s plight, given his <a href=\"https:\/\/www.smh.com.au\/sport\/swimming\/chinese-olympic-champion-sun-yang-accused-of-attacking-brazilian-swimmer-larissa-oliveira-20150810-givkfr.html\">alleged assault of a Brazilian female swimmer<\/a>, bitter <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/article\/us-swimming-world-sun\/brazil-coach-blasts-chinese-olympic-champ-sun-idUSKCN0QF04C20150810\">verbal exchanges with the South African and Canadian national coaches<\/a>, and recent altercation with Horton himself. The latter sparked another firestorm in Budapest, with Yang reportedly \u201cdisrupting\u201d his Aussie rival\u2019s training sessions in an attempt to \u201cdistract and taunt him.\u201d He was able to channel this energy into a stellar 400 LCM freestyle swim, burying Horton with an insurmountable two-second lead at the 2017 World Championships.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>#1. In a formal statement to NBC, King lambasted the Russian for \u201cshaking [her] finger number one,\u201d an inappropriate gesture for a two-time \u201cdrug cheater.\u201d <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cI\u2019m just not a fan,\u201d comments King, who proceeded to clinch the Olympic gold by a few fractions of a second.
