Commonwealth Games medallist Lewis Clareburt and Olympian Emma Robinson\u00a0headline the 2018 AON New Zealand Open champs starting in Auckland on July 2.\u00a0Clareburt is top seed in four of his five events, with Robinson top seed in all three of\u00a0her events, the 400m, 800m and 1500m freestyle. Both are competing for the\u00a0Wellington-based Capital Swimming club, as is para-swimmer and world record-holder Mary Fisher.<\/p>\n

The championships are qualification events for the 2018 Pan Pacific\u00a0Championships, Junior Pan Pacific Championships and Youth Olympic Games, and\u00a0Robinson is aiming to qualify for the Pan Pacific Championships in Japan, with\u00a0Clareburt having qualified at the Commonwealth Games. Hayley McIntosh\u2019s seed\u00a0time in the 800m is also under the Panpacs qualifying time, which is seven seconds\u00a0slower than the qualifying time for the Commonwealth Games.<\/p>\n

Clareburt, 18, will compete in the men\u2019s 100m and 400m freestyle, 200m butterfly\u00a0and both individual medleys.<\/p>\n

\u201cI haven\u2019t tapered yet, so Opens is a chance for me to have a hit out before heading\u00a0off to Pan Pacs in Tokyo,\u201d Clareburt said. \u201cI\u2019ve been working on some new skills\u00a0with my coach (Gary Hollywood), so I\u2019m looking forward to testing them out\u201d.<\/p>\n

More than 300 swimmers, including 21 swimmers from seven other countries, will\u00a0contest the championships, including 25 para swimmers. It is the final opportunity for\u00a0New Zealand para swimmers to qualify for selection for the Pan Pacific Para\u00a0Swimming Championships in Cairns.<\/p>\n

However, many of New Zealand\u2019s top swimmers, including top para swimmer\u00a0Sophie Pascoe, who is in Europe, Commonwealth Games finalist and Panpacs\u00a0qualifier Bradlee Ashby, and team mates Bobbi Gichard, who is off to Florida on\u00a0scholarship this year, Australian-based Laticia Transom and Matthew Stanley,\u00a0and Helena Gasson have not entered. Nor has US-based Gabrielle Fa\u2019amausili,\u00a0who has had a recent operation and pulled out of the Commonwealth Games, or\u00a0promising young teen Bre Crawford.<\/p>\n

However sprinter Michael Pickett,15, is making the trip from Australia, where he has\u00a0been based since January. He won both Australian and New Zealand freestyle NAG\u00a0titles earlier this year and is third seed in the 50m dash.<\/p>\n

Daniel Hunter heads the 100m freestyle seedings, and while he has qualified for\u00a0Panpacs during the Commonwealth Games in the 50m, he will have to break his\u00a0national record set at those Games in the 100m to qualify in that event. He\u00a0competed in those Games through relay qualification.<\/p>\n

World championship backstroke finalist Corey Main and his brother Bayley – both\u00a0US-based – will also be competing; the former also having qualified for Panpacs at\u00a0the Commonwealth Games.<\/p>\n

Swimming New Zealand CEO Steve Johns is excited for the week of competition.\u00a0\u201cThere will be an impressive line-up of talent competing, and with the event being a\u00a0qualification meet, I\u2019m sure we\u2019ll see some very fast times.\u201d<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
