BLOOMINGTON, Indiana, August 6. THE Indiana Hoosiers received some great news when the NCAA elected to grant Hoosier All-American Eric Ress an eligibility extension last week. Ress, who sat out 2011-12 to focus on the French Olympic Trials, already had burned his redshirt year. He used that as a sophomore while rehabbing a torn Anterior Cruciate Ligament.<\/p>\n
Ress had his five-year period of eligibility reset after an Athletics Activities Waiver was successfully granted by the NCAA. These waivers are allowed for athletes who are involved in official tryouts involving national teams and\/or training and competition that directly qualifies participants for final Olympic tryouts. Since Ress participated with the French National Team in an attempt to qualify for its Olympic squad, Ress had to sit out the 2011-12 season as France's Trials conflicted with the NCAA Championships. <\/p>\n
“We are thrilled that Eric has been granted this extension of his five-year period of eligibility, allowing him two more seasons of competition at IU,” IU spokesperson Melanie Schneider told Swimming World<\/i>. “He is a true team leader and his performances both in and out of the pool will be key as the Hoosiers look to build upon last year's top-10 finish at the NCAA meet.”<\/p>\n
Ress nearly won an NCAA title during his redshirt sophomore year in 2010-11, when he took runner-up in both the 100 and 200-yard backstroke events. The extension means that Ress will be a junior competitively in 2012-13, and a senior in 2013-14.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
