{"id":315568,"date":"2018-06-25T15:32:51","date_gmt":"2018-06-25T22:32:51","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/?p=315568"},"modified":"2018-06-25T15:32:51","modified_gmt":"2018-06-25T22:32:51","slug":"paltrinieri-throws-down-huge-mile-at-2018-mediterranean-games","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/paltrinieri-throws-down-huge-mile-at-2018-mediterranean-games\/","title":{"rendered":"Paltrinieri Throws Down Huge Mile At 2018 Mediterranean Games"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The swimming at the 2018 Mediterranean Games have been underway from June 23-25 this week in Tarragona, Spain, with some of the region\u2019s best swimmers throwing down some fast times ahead of some of the bigger international meets still on the schedule for this summer. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/results\/2018-mediterranean-games\/international-elite\/2018\/June\/23\">2018 Mediterranean Games &#8211; Results<\/a><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The swim of the meet likely belonged to Italian Olympic Champion <\/span><b>Gregorio Paltrinieri<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, who won the men\u2019s 1500 freestyle on the second night of the meet in a blazing fast 14:46.25. That time puts him as the second fastest performer in the event this year and continues to set up what should be a great match up with German <\/span><b>Florian Wellbrock <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">(who currently has the fastest time in the world with a 14:40.69 from April)<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">later this summer at the European Championships. Paltrinieri would also go on to win the men\u2019s 400 free in 3:46.29, a personal best for the 23-year old. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Fellow Italian <\/span><b>Simona Quadarella <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">also turned heads with her win in the 800 free on the first night of the swimming competition in Spain. The 19-year old distance swimmer won the event in 8:21.55 ahead of Spanish Olympian (and silver medalist in this event in 2012) <\/span><b>Mireia Belmonte<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Quadarella would go on to win a much closer race in the 400 free also over Belmonte, touching out the Spanish swimmer 4:05.68 to 4:05.87. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Belmonte, who is the reigning Olympic champion in the 200 butterfly from the Rio Olympics, would go on to win the 200 IM (2:11.66) and the 200 fly (2:07.80).<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Other notable swims included Egypt\u2019s <\/span><b>Farida Osman <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">win in the women\u2019s 50 fly, where she set a new meet record of 25.48 and was the only woman under the 26-second barrier, and Algerian <\/span><b>Ossama Sahnoune\u2019s <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">win in the 100 free. Sahnoune touched the wall in 48.00 to set a new national record and moved him into the top 10 fastest performances of this year.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Osman also won the women\u2019s 50 free in a new meet record of 24.83, while Greece\u2019s <\/span><b>Kristian Gkolomeev <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">would win the men\u2019s 50 free in 21.66, a new national
