{"id":314213,"date":"2018-06-13T10:54:11","date_gmt":"2018-06-13T17:54:11","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/?p=314213"},"modified":"2018-06-13T10:54:11","modified_gmt":"2018-06-13T17:54:11","slug":"kathleen-baker-surges-to-mare-nostrum-series-record-ruck-wins-twice","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/kathleen-baker-surges-to-mare-nostrum-series-record-ruck-wins-twice\/","title":{"rendered":"Kathleen Baker Surges to Mare Nostrum Series Record; Ruck Wins Twice"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><em>By Dan D&#8217;Addona.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><strong>Kathleen Baker<\/strong> had a breakout prelims at the Mare Nostrum Series in Barcelona on Wednesday.<\/p>\n<p>In the 100 backstroke prelims, she finished in 59.47, a strong race for her firs major long-course meet of the season.<\/p>\n<p>She did even better in the finals, winning the 100 back in a blistering 58.77, setting a Mare Nostrum Series record.<\/p>\n<p>Denmark\u2019s <strong>Mie Nielsen<\/strong> was second in 59.57, followed by Russia\u2019s <strong>Anastasia Fesikova<\/strong> (59.51) and <strong>Kira<\/strong> <strong>Toussaint<\/strong> (1:00.02) of the Netherlands.<\/p>\n<p>Hungary\u2019s <strong>Katinka Hosszu<\/strong> finished eighth in 1:08.59.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Missy Franklin<\/strong> scratched the 100 back to focus on the 200 free, where she finished fifth in 1:59.25.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Taylor Ruck<\/strong> won the 200 free in 1:56.06. It was her second victory of the day. It lead a 1-2-3 Canada sweep with <strong>Rebecca Smith<\/strong> (1:57.72) and <strong>Kayla Noelle Sanchez<\/strong> (1:58.49). Hosszu was seventh in 2:04.39 and<strong> Rikako Ikee<\/strong> was eighth (2:07.56).<\/p>\n<h3>\nMen\u2019s 100 Breast<\/h3>\n<p>Baker wasn\u2019t the only record on the day. Japan\u2019s <strong>Yasuhiro Koseki<\/strong> won the 100 breast in 59.01, setting a series record.<\/p>\n<p>Russia\u2019s <strong>Anton Chupkov<\/strong> was second (59.92), followed by <strong>Arno Kamminga<\/strong> (1:00.08) of the Netherlands.<\/p>\n<h3>Women\u2019s 100 Free<\/h3>\n<p>Canada\u2019s <strong>Taylor Ruck<\/strong> got off to a fast start in Barcelona, winning the 50 free in 24.68.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Kim Busch<\/strong> of the Netherlands was second in 24.95, followed by Russia\u2019s <strong>Maria Kameneva<\/strong> (25.04) and Canada\u2019s <strong>Kayla Noelle Sanchez<\/strong> (25.09). <strong>Grace Ariola<\/strong> of the U.S. was seventh in 25.44.<\/p>\n<h3>\nMen\u2019s 50 Back<\/h3>\n<p><strong>Michael Andrew<\/strong> started the Barcelona stop of the Mare Nostrum series off in strong fashion, winning the 50 back.<\/p>\n<p>The U.S. swimmer finished in 24.70 to finish ahead of Australia\u2019s <strong>Benjamin Treffers<\/strong> (25.11) and<strong> Ryan Held<\/strong> (25.25) of the U.S.<\/p>\n<h3>Women\u2019s 800 Free<\/h3>\n<p><strong>Erica Sullivan<\/strong> won the women\u2019s 800 free in 8:25.51. The U.S. swimmer finished nearly two seconds ahead of Austria\u2019s <strong>Marlene Kahler<\/strong> (8:37.63) and Italy\u2019s <strong>Giulia Salin<\/strong> (8:37.80).<\/p>\n<h2>Women\u2019s 50 Breast<\/h2>\n<p>Russia\u2019s <strong>Yuliya Efimova<\/strong> continued to dominate the breaststroke events, winning the 50 in 30.43.<\/p>\n<p>U.S. Olympians <strong>Molly Hannis<\/strong> (30.75) and <strong>Katie Meili<\/strong> (31.15), finished second and third, respectively.<\/p>\n<h3>Men\u2019s 200 IM<\/h3>\n<p><strong>Gunnar Bentz<\/strong> of the U.S. surged to victory in the 200 IM, finishing in 2:00.69.<\/p>\n<p>Hungary\u2019s <strong>David Verraszto<\/strong> was second in 2:021.23, followed by Russia\u2019s <strong>Kirill Prigoda<\/strong> (2:01.61).<\/p>\n<h3>Men\u2019s 50 Fly<\/h3>\n<p><strong>Andriy Govorov<\/strong> of the Ukraine won the 50 fly in 23.22, holding off Russia\u2019s <strong>Oleg Kostin<\/strong> (23.42), <strong>Yauhen<\/strong> <strong>Tsurkin<\/strong> (23.52) of Belarus and <strong>Michael Andrew<\/strong> (23.72).<\/p>\n<h3>Women\u2019s 400 IM<\/h3>\n<p>Hungary\u2019s <strong>Katinka Hosszu<\/strong> won the 400 IM in 4:38.32, holding off compatriot<strong> Zsuzsanna Jakabos<\/strong> (4:40.12).<\/p>\n<p><strong>Viktoria Zeynep Gunes<\/strong> of Turkey was third at 4:40.41 and <strong>Brooke Forde<\/strong> of the U.S. finished fourth in 4:43.87.<\/p>\n<h3>Men\u2019s 100 Free<\/h3>\n<p>Japan\u2019s <strong>Katsumi Nakamura<\/strong> (48.79) and <strong>Shinri Shioura<\/strong> (48.98) went 1-2 in the 100 free.<\/p>\n<p>Brazil\u2019s <strong>Bruno Fratus<\/strong> was third (49.21). Held was eighth at 49.97.<\/p>\n<h3>Women\u2019s 200 Breast<\/h3>\n<p>Japan\u2019s <strong>Kanako Watanabe<\/strong> continued her strong week by winning the 200 breast in 2:23.09.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Jessica Vall Montero<\/strong> was second (2:25.03), followed by <strong>Daria Chikunova<\/strong> (2:25.04). Efimova was sixth (2:25.53).<\/p>\n<h3>Men\u2019s 200 Fly<\/h3>\n<p>Hungary\u2019s <strong>Bence Biczo<\/strong> won the 200 butterfly in 1:56.70, barely holding off Denmark\u2019s <strong>Viktor Bromer<\/strong> (1:56.92).<\/p>\n<p>Japan\u2019s <strong>Nao Horomura<\/strong> was third in 1:57.65.<\/p>\n<h3>Women\u2019s 100 Free<\/h3>\n<p>Japan\u2019s <strong>Rikako Ikee<\/strong> returned to the top, winning the 100 butterfly in 56.40.<\/p>\n<p>Russia\u2019s <strong>Svetlana Chimrova<\/strong> was second in 57.23, followed by <strong>Louise Hansson<\/strong> in 58.96.<\/p>\n<h3>Men\u2019s 400 Free<\/h3>\n<p>Japan\u2019s <strong>Naito Ehara<\/strong> won the 400 free to close the day\u2019s session.
