During the Saturday morning prelims session at the TYR Pro Swim Series in Santa Clara, Olympic gold medalists Ryan Murphy <\/strong>(men’s 100 back),\u00a0Lilly King\u00a0<\/strong>(women’s 100 breast) and\u00a0Simone Manuel\u00a0<\/strong>(women’s 100 free)\u00a0all claimed top seeds in their best events.<\/p>\n

Meanwhile, in the men’s 100 free,\u00a0Caeleb Dressel<\/strong> snuck into the final despite swimming in a practice suit for prelims, but 2012 Olympic gold medalist\u00a0Nathan Adrian\u00a0<\/strong>missed out in 15th.<\/p>\n

Women’s 100 Back<\/strong><\/h3>\n

Club Wolverine’s\u00a0Ali DeLoof\u00a0<\/strong>put up a quick time of 1:00.25 to lead the way over a tough field in the women’s 100 back. Following behind were World Junior Champion Regan Smith\u00a0<\/strong>(1:00.57), Olympic and World Champs finalist\u00a0Olivia Smoliga\u00a0<\/strong>(1:00.81) and Canadian world record-holder\u00a0Kylie Masse\u00a0<\/strong>(1:00.91), setting up what should be a tight final with multiple sub-1:00 performances possible.<\/p>\n

Carmel’s\u00a0Claire Adams\u00a0<\/strong>qualified fifth in 1:01.53, and Aquajets’\u00a0Isabelle Stadden\u00a0<\/strong>was sixth in 1:01.71, just ahead of Cal’s\u00a0Amy Bilquist\u00a0<\/strong>(1:01.73). Also getting into the final were Swim Ontario’s\u00a0Kennedy Goss\u00a0<\/strong>(1:02.04) and Cal’s\u00a0Keaton Blovad <\/strong>(1:02.08).<\/p>\n

M<\/strong>en’s 100 Back<\/strong><\/h3>\n
Cal’s\u00a0Ryan Murphy\u00a0<\/strong>cruised to a 54.86 in the 100 back prelims to take lane four for the evening final. Team Elite’s\u00a0Ryosuke Irie\u00a0<\/strong>(55.29) and Tucson Ford’s\u00a0Matt Grevers\u00a0<\/strong>(55.40) will bracket the reigning Olympic gold medalist, while Murphy’s teammates\u00a0Jacob Pebley\u00a0<\/strong>(55.45) and Daniel Carr<\/strong> (55.57) finished fourth and fifth, respectively.<\/p>\n
The Canadian duo of\u00a0Javier Acevedo\u00a0<\/strong>(55.60) and\u00a0Markus Thormeyer\u00a0<\/strong>(56.02), Texas’\u00a0Austin Katz<\/strong>\u00a0(56.07) and\u00a0Chris Staka\u00a0<\/strong>(56.38) also made the final.<\/p>\n

Women’s 200 Fly<\/strong><\/h3>\n
Tucson Ford’s\u00a0Leah Smith\u00a0<\/strong>continued her improvement in non-freestyle events as she touched out Cal’s\u00a0Katie McLaughlin<\/strong> to qualify first, 2:11.27 to 2:11.32. Cardinal’s\u00a0Kelsi Dahlia<\/strong>, the winner of the 100 fly Friday evening, took third in 2:12.08.<\/p>\n
Riptide’s\u00a0Regan Smith<\/strong>, already with a 200 back win in her pocket, qualified for her second final of the day in 2:12.42, followed by 18-year-old World Championship semifinalist\u00a0Dakota Luther\u00a0<\/strong>(2:13.00). Other finalists included Team Elite’s\u00a0Sarah Gibson\u00a0<\/strong>(2:13.37), Texas’\u00a0Lauren Case\u00a0<\/strong>(2:13.54), Mexico’s\u00a0Maria Jose Mata Coco\u00a0<\/strong>(2:14.53) and Stanford’s\u00a0Hannah Kukurugya\u00a0<\/strong>(2:14.82).<\/p>\n

Men’s 200 Fly<\/strong><\/h3>\n
Gator’s\u00a0Jan Switkowski\u00a0<\/strong>finished 0.11 ahead of\u00a0Athens Bulldog’s\u00a0Chase Kalisz<\/strong> for the top seed, 1:59.15 to 1:59.26. Kalisz has won the 200 fly at all four previous TYR Pro Swim Series stops this season, but this evening’s final shold be a battle.<\/p>\n
Poseidon’s\u00a0Trenton Julian\u00a0<\/strong>was close behind the top two in 1:59.31, and\u00a0Tucson Ford’s\u00a0Justin Wright\u00a0<\/strong>and Nation’s Capital’s\u00a0Jack Conger\u00a0<\/strong>tied for fourth in 1:59.52. Also under 2:00 were Athens Bulldog’s\u00a0Pace Clark\u00a0<\/strong>(1:59.81), Cal’s\u00a0Zheng Quah\u00a0<\/strong>(1:59.84) and Cal’s\u00a0Tom Shields\u00a0<\/strong>(1:59.99). Dynamo’s\u00a0Jay Litherland\u00a0<\/strong>took the final spot for the evening final with a ninth-place time of 2:00.25.<\/p>\n

Mexico’s\u00a0Melissa Rodriguez\u00a0<\/strong>touched second in 1:09.19, one hundredth ahead of Gamecock’s\u00a0Rachel Bernhardt<\/strong> (1:09.20).\u00a0Annie Lazor<\/strong> also finished under 1:10, with her 1:09.65 ranking as the No. 4 time of the morning.<\/p>\n

Longhorn’s\u00a0Andrew Wilson\u00a0<\/strong>paced the 100 breast prelims with his time of 1:01.37, three hundredths ahead of Cal’s\u00a0Josh Prenot\u00a0<\/strong>and Tiger Elite’s\u00a0Miguel De Lara Ojeda<\/strong>, who tied for second in 1:01.40. Sandpipers’\u00a0Cody Miller<\/strong>, the Olympic bronze medalist in the event, took fourth in 1:01.51.<\/p>\n

Women’s 100 Free<\/strong><\/h3>\n
Stanford’s\u00a0Simone Manuel\u00a0<\/strong>edged out teammate\u00a0Lia Neal\u00a0<\/strong>in the final heat, and those two ended up with the only times under 54 seconds. Manuel finished in 53.93 and Neal in 53.95.\u00a0Margo Geer\u00a0<\/strong>(53.74) is the only other American to crack 54 so far this season.<\/p>\n
Canada’s\u00a0Penny Oleksiak<\/strong>, who shared Olympic gold with Manuel in 2016, qualified third in 54.28, and Stanford’s\u00a0Katie Ledecky\u00a0<\/strong>took fourth in 54.82. Cal’s\u00a0Katie McLaughlin\u00a0<\/strong>swam a quick time of 54.93 for fifth, just ahead of teammate\u00a0Abbey Weitzeil\u00a0<\/strong>(55.22).<\/p>\n
Sisters\u00a0Catie\u00a0<\/strong>and\u00a0Gabby DeLoof\u00a0<\/strong>qualified seventh and ninth, respectively, with Catie swimming a time of 55.48 and Gabby coming in at 55.77. Mexico’s\u00a0Lili Ibanez Lopez\u00a0<\/strong>was eighth in 55.76.<\/p>\n

Four men broke 50 in the 100 free prelims, with Cal’s\u00a0Michael Jensen\u00a0<\/strong>leading the way in 49.83, followed by HPC-Vancouver’s\u00a0Markus Thormeyer\u00a0<\/strong>(49.90), Indiana’s\u00a0Zach Apple\u00a0<\/strong>(49.91) and Harvard’s\u00a0Dean Farris\u00a0<\/strong>(49.92). Missouri’s\u00a0Michael Chadwick\u00a0<\/strong>took fifth in 50.11.<\/p>\n
Ohio State’s\u00a0Josh Fleagle\u00a0<\/strong>qualified sixth in 50.16, and\u00a0World Champion\u00a0Caeleb Dressel\u00a0<\/strong>finished seventh in 50.24. Dressel, however, wore a practice suit in prelims and should have plenty of room for improvement in finals. Cal’s\u00a0Ryan Murphy\u00a0<\/strong>(50.35) and Mexico’s Long Gutierrez<\/strong> (50.37) also finished in the top nine.<\/p>\n
In a surprising finish, Cal’s Nathan Adrian\u00a0<\/strong>finished 15th in 50.57, one spot behind NOVA’s\u00a0Townley Haas<\/strong>\u00a0(50.50). Adrian had won the 100 free at every previous Pro Swim Series stop this season.<\/p>\n
