ON the weekend of December 8-9th, the New England Masters Swim Club (NEM) held its 2001 Short Course Meters (SCM) Championship meet at Wheaton College's Balfour Natatorium in Norton, MA.

NEM is the largest recognized United States Masters Swim Club (USMS) with more than 1,300 members throughout MA, NH, RI and VT. With more than 370 individual entrants and some 190+ relays, the NEM 2001 SCM Championship was the largest USMS 2001 sanctioned SCM meet held anywhere in the U.S. this year.

Proof that Masters swimming is a team sport, Great Bay Masters (GBM), swimming out of three pools in the Portsmouth, NH area, successfully defended its NE SCM Championship title due to its ability to recruit more than 70% of its members to show up and race! GBM overwhelmed both Cambridge Masters (CMSC), swimming out of Harvard's Blodgett Pool, and Minuteman Masters (MMAN), swimming out of Hanscom AFB in Bedford, MA.
The contest for first place was never really that close as GBM finished nearly 1,000 points ahead of second place CMSC. The struggle for the other 9 top ten positions was intense. CMSC led MMAN throughout much of the meet but as the second day came to a close, MMAN-under the always spirited leadership of coach Rich Axtell, nearly caught CMSC for second.

SUMMARY OF NEM WORKOUT GROUP FINISH (COMBINED)

1) Great Bay 3,664
2) Cambridge 2,667
3) Minuteman 2,455
4) Andover YMCA 1,140
5) WNEC Golden Bears 543
6) Wheaton Wahoos 516
7) East Providence 418
8) South County YMCA 322
9) Nashua Penquins 277
10) JCC Newton Masters 259

RECORDS FALL
You can make a pretty good case that New England is the center of master's RACING in the US. NEM averages a meet participation rate that is close to 50% of its members, compared to USMS National average that probably is no better than 20%. Furthermore, the intense team competition, as evidenced by the more than 150 relays assembled, produces an atmosphere that borders on Final Four madness.

Given this supercharged environment, given the fact that the Balfour Natatorium is reputed to be one of the fastest pools in New England and given that the psyche sheets had several swimmers entered at or near
world record pace-it was widely expected that records would fall. And fall they did!

The standout individual male swimmer of the meet was Jim Harvey (35-39) from Maine Masters. Harvey, a former swimming standout at Bucknell, who trains on his own, traveled many miles south to challenge the swiftest NEM swimmers. Harvey walked away from the meet with the following records: five world (100 IM, 100 Fly, 200 IM, 50 Fly and 100 Back) and one additional national (100 free). Harvey also managed to defeat all male swimmers in every event that he entered save one-the 100 back-which he lost to a
swimmer ten years younger from CSCM, Ben Lo-Pinto, who represented the Seychelles in the 2000 Olympics.

The standout individual female swimmer of the meet was Joel Feldman (50-54) representing the NEM Workout at the Keene YMCA in NH. A few days before the meet, Joel planned to scratch due to continuing back problems that prevented her from using the starting blocks. Joel decided to come anyway, expecting that she wouldn't swim fast but would enjoy the company of her fellow NEMs. In spite of her back ailments, Joel managed to better the following records: three world (50 Fly, 100 Back and 50 Free) and one additional national (50 back) record. We are waiting to see what Joel can do fully recovered.

NEM has a very strong contingent of 50+ male swimmers, including several that have set USMS National and FINA World records. About a year ago, Greg Shaw returned to swimming after a 30 year lay-off. Greg and Fred
Schlicher, a Masters record holder who has been a NEM for more than 25 years, both broke the world record in the 100 Fly. Fred swam slightly faster than Greg this time around but Greg retains the NE record since
he swam faster earlier this year (1:01.98). Greg added the 50 fly to his growing collection of Masters world records.

Andrea Packard (25-29) swimming for the NEM group at the Andover YMCA, broke the world record in the 200 breaststroke. Andrea finished more than 10 seconds ahead of the competition and now holds the national 200 record for SCM and SCY.

Jason Eaddy (25-29) of CMSC broke the national record for 200 fly. Eaddy, a former distance specialist from Princeton, rarely had a chance to swim anything other than longer events in college. Now that he's a Masters swimmer, he's discovered the joys of the 200 fly.

CMSC has broken multiple USMS national and/or world records at every NE Regional Championship meet for the past three years. This tradition continued in this meet as CMSC swimmers established 7 new FINA world and/or USMS national relay records in age groups that ranged from 76-99 to 120-159. Coach Rob Berry team may now have more relay records then any other USMS group that swims out of a single pool.

WORLD RECORDS BETTERED (INCLUDES ALL WHO BETTERED LISTED RECORD AS OF MAY
