NEW HAVEN, CT., Dec. 12. GREENWICH High, led by standout junior Kelly Hannigan, romped to the Connecticut State Open Girls' Swimming and Diving
\nChampionship.<\/p>\n
The meet was held at the Kiphuth Pool on the campus of Yale University in New Haven Nov. 17.<\/p>\n
Greenwich racked up 451 points en route to the state title, with Darien (291.5) and Cheshire (242) second and third, respectively.<\/p>\n
Hannigan won the 200 IM (All-America 2:04.57) and was runner-up in the 100 breast (1:04.80 to winner Cheshire's Carolyn Bowman's 1:04.41). Hannigan also swam the fly leg Greensich's championship 200 medley relay to begin the night's proceedings.<\/p>\n
Bristol Central senior Kelly Harrigan was a one-woman wrecking crew of her own with state-record swims to win the 200 free (1:49.48) and 500 free 4:49.63 (#5 nationally for 2001-02) — excellent times for a high schooler.<\/p>\n
Another dual gold medalist was Darien senior Thorey Thelin, who won the 50 free (23.87) and 100 fly (56.08 with Bowman second in 57.53). She also anchored her school's winning 200 free and its runner-up 400 free quartet.<\/p>\n
Bunnell senior Gia Santoro (447.90) was winner on the 1-merter board; Pomperaug junior Kaitlin Moughty won the 100 free (53.22) with Darien's Liz Krueger (53.25) hot on her heels; and Staples sophomore Lauren Evanosky won the 100 back (57.65) and was runner-up in the 200 IM (2:08.49).<\/p>\n
