{"id":312835,"date":"2018-06-06T10:07:22","date_gmt":"2018-06-06T17:07:22","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/?p=312835"},"modified":"2018-06-06T10:17:52","modified_gmt":"2018-06-06T17:17:52","slug":"judge-who-sentenced-ex-stanford-swimmer-for-sexual-assault-recalled","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/judge-who-sentenced-ex-stanford-swimmer-for-sexual-assault-recalled\/","title":{"rendered":"Judge Who Sentenced Ex-Stanford Swimmer For Sexual Assault Recalled"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The judge who handled the sexual assault case of former Stanford swimmer <a href=\"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/?s=brock+turner\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>Brock Turner<\/strong><\/a> has been recalled by California voters.<\/p>\n<p>Santa Clara Judge <strong>Aaron Persky<\/strong> <a href=\"http:\/\/www.newsweek.com\/judge-aaron-persky-who-ruled-broke-turner-case-voted-out-first-california-960664\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">was voted out on Tuesday<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The case received national attention after Turner was convicted of sexual assault and sentenced to six months in jail instead of a long prison term in 2016.<\/p>\n<p>According to The Associated Press, Persky is the first California judge recalled since 1932. He has been on the bench for nearly 15 years.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The broader message of this victory is that violence against women is now a voting issue,&#8221; women&#8217;s rights activist Michele Dauber told the AP. She said the local vote will resonate nationally and underscores the staying power of the #MeToo movement.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;This is a historical moment in time. Women are standing up for their rights and there is a national reckoning.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Persky declined to comment Tuesday but earlier told the AP: &#8220;I expected some negative reaction. But not this.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Persky said he was adopting the probation department&#8217;s recommendation to spare Turner prison for several reasons, including Turner&#8217;s age, clean criminal record and the fact that both Turner and the victim were intoxicated.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The judge who handled the sexual assault case of former Stanford swimmer Brock Turner has been recalled by California voters.
