IOWA CITY, Iowa, July 19. MARY Schneider and Tyler Hines each set pool records to kick off the first night of finals at the University of Iowa Aquatic Center in Iowa City. <\/p>\n
Mary Schneider of the Academy Bullets got the meet rolling with a new pool record in the women's 100m free. Schneider swam a 56.92 to slice a tenth off Kelly Ryan's record set last summer. Ruby Martin of Wisconsin Aquatics finished in 57.03 for second, while Aja Van Hout, also out of Wisconsin Aquatics, rounded out the top three finishers in 57.28. New Trier's Jonathan Grodecki flipped last at the halfway point but matched his preliminary time of 51.79 to win the men's race over Wisconsin's Michael Weiss, who went out almost half a second faster but faded to second in 51.83. Gianni Sesto of Club Hawkeye swam a 52.05 for third. <\/p>\n
New Trier picked up another win as Kara Lucenti topped the women's 200m breast finale in 2:36.19. Moriah Ross of Central Iowa placed second in 2:37.18, while Jennah Haney of Wisconsin swam a 2:37.74 to take third. For the second straight men's event, the winner was decided by less than a tenth of a second. John Bushman of Green Bay YMCA got the better of Wisconsin's Michael Weiss, who just finished second in the 100m free, 2:19.91 to 2:19.95. Weiss moved from fifth to second over the last length but couldn't quite close the gap. Paul Corbae, competing unattached, turned in a 2:20.37 to take third.<\/p>\n
Wheaton's Connie Hsu set the pool record in the women's 200m fly last year, and while she couldn't quite match her time from a year ago, she still won the event in 2:17.61 this time around. Hannah Kastigar of Aberdeen Swim Club led at the final turn but slipped to second in 2:18.14. Annalise Colton of Minnesota Aquatics turned in a 2:19.02 to round out the top three. In the men's race, Nasa Wildcat's Kevin Quinn and Blue Devil's Matthew Conway pulled away from the rest of the heat and battled down to the finish. At the wall, Conway had just enough left to get there first, 2:02.53 to 2:02.59. Wisconsin's Marcus Guttmann picked up third in 2:04.23.<\/p>\n
The 800m freestyle events closed out the night. Patriot Aquatics' Morgan Dickson recorded the only performance under nine minutes with an 8:59.03. Emma Smith of St. Charles placed second in 9:03.78, just ahead of Patriot Aquatics' Madison Blaydes (9:03.85). Wisconsin's Tyler Hines posted a new pool record in winning the men's event in 8:24.35, erasing Daniel Thomson's 8:25.71 from last summer from the books.
