On the last day of the U.S. Olympic Trials, Michael Phelps dropped the 200 freestyle to put full focus on the 400 freestyle relay. Phelps would have swum his leg of the relay after doing a prelim and semifinal swim in the 200 freestyle that day, and he and Bob Bowman were convinced Phelps could not recover well enough to do what needed to be done in the relay to win gold. The voting came down to just two of the three other aquatic disciplines, with diving earning the most votes, 53.62 percent over water polo, which received 36.23 percent. Synchronized swimming was third with 10.14 percent.
