ALPHEN a\/d RIJN, THE NETHERLANDS Dec. 9. ONE week before the European Championships, several Dutch contenders for medals in Antwerp showed they will be ready. Not surprisingly, it was Inge de Bruijn who attracted the most attention, but a lot of other high quality times were set also. <\/p>\n
The highlight of this second day of the Dutch Nationals was the national record of 25.37 seconds for the men's 50m backstroke, swum by Bastiaan Tamminga.<\/p>\n
After a prelim time of 58.14 in the 100m fly, all eyes were focused on Inge de Bruijn, who was poised to attack the European record held by Martina Moravcova (57.16). De Bruijn split 27.30 on her way to a solid 57.55. It was no record, but Inky was satisfied
\nbecause of her good splits and because she just returned from heavy training in America.<\/p>\n
Backstroker Suze Valen finished just above her own national record for the 50m backstroke, but her 28.55 is a good start for Antwerp next week. Hinkelien Schreuder, 17, placed second in this event (28.95). <\/p>\n
PSV's Miranda Bosma swam to gold in the 200m breast, leading all the way to touch in 2.32.67, a few meters ahead of Jolijn van Valkengoed (2.34.09). <\/p>\n
Haike van Stralen, winner of the 400m freestyle, also won the 200m free in a strong 2.01.28.<\/p>\n
In the absence of the retired Marcel Wouda and number two from the EYC in Dunkerque, Georgios Dimitras, who has joined the Greek national team, Robin van Aggele was the only serious contender for the 400m IM title. Miles ahead, the pro swimmer for Amsterdam touched in a decent 4.26.20 (1.00.69; 2.07.88; 3.25.45).<\/p>\n
The top flyer from the Phillips team, Joris Keizer, raced to 52.68 on the 100m fly after a spit of 24.67, just missing Stefan Aartsen's national record. But
\nhe wasn't satisfied about his time yet; he knows he has to go faster in Antwerp to be succesful.<\/p>\n
Olympic bronze medalist on the 4 x 200m freestyle relay, Martijn Zuijdweg, proved to be on the right track again, finishing first in 1.48.36 on the 200m
\nfree, after splits of 25.18, 52.77 and 1.20.71.<\/p>\n
The 50m backstroke was a battle between Phillips backstroke specialist Klaas Erik Zwering and sprinter Bastiaan Tamminga. Both men dived under the Dutch
\nnational record time. Tamminga proved to everyone that he was indeed the right candidate for the backstroke spot in the medley relay in Antwerp, finishing
