Five Canadian coaches will have an opportunity to develop their skills as apprentice national team coaches thanks to a partnership between Swimming Canada and the Canadian Swim Coaches and Teachers Association.<\/p>\n

The organizations worked together to select promising coaches to take part in several major competitions this summer. The following coaches were selected out of dozens of qualified applicants:<\/p>\n

BestFest Open Water Swim Festival (May 23-June 3, Mallorca, Spain):\u00a0Olivier Renaud<\/strong>, Whitby Dolphins (Ontario)<\/p>\n

Pan Pacific Para-swimming Championships (Aug. 9-12, Cairns, Australia):\u00a0Ryan Allen<\/strong>, C.N. Blue et Or (New Brunswick)<\/p>\n

Pan Pacific Swimming Championships (Aug. 9-14, Tokyo):\u00a0Abderahamane Tissira<\/strong>, Regina Optimist Dolphins (Saskatchewan)<\/p>\n

Junior Pan Pacific Swimming Championships (Aug. 23-26, Fiji):\u00a0Greg Kozell<\/strong>, Tritons Swimming (Alberta) and\u00a0Janet Hyslop<\/strong>, Kenora Swimming (Ontario)<\/p>\n

Each apprentice coach will work as part of a team staff and have the opportunity for hands-on learning experience alongside the country\u2019s top coaches. Each coach will also provide a report on their experience. CSCTA provided funding to cover each coach\u2019s expenses, while Swimming Canada is facilitating the national team opportunities.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe are very excited about the real world international experience that this program will provide to our members and are looking forward to working with Swimming Canada to continue this program in the future,\u201d said CSCTA Executive Director Chris Hindmarch-Watson<\/strong>. \u201cThe benefits of this program will filter down to numerous CSCTA and Swimming Canada members as detailed apprentice reports will be circulated to our entire membership at the conclusion of each activity.\u201d<\/p>\n

Renaud previously worked as Head Age Group coach in Gatineau from 2013 to 2016, where his swimmers won the Open Water Age Group national championship in 2015. He is working to develop a summer Open Water program for younger swimmers (age 12-15).<\/p>\n

Allen coaches five Para-swimmers, including Danielle Dorris<\/strong>, who became the youngest Paralympian in Canada\u2019s history at the Rio 2016 Games. In addition to the overall experience of working with national team coaches and race analysis staff in an international setting, Allen is looking to develop his expertise with other impairment classes.<\/p>\n

Tissira\u2019s 20-plus years of experience includes coaching Brian Palaschuk<\/strong> to the 2016 Junior Pan Pacific Championships, now he\u2019s looking to gain experience at the senior level.<\/p>\n

Hyslop, meanwhile, has 30 years experience including at the Sydney 2000 Paralympic Games, and leading the National Coach Certification Program in the Northwest Ontario region. She coaches 2017 FINA World Junior Championship relay gold medallist Gabe Mastromatteo, who has his sights set on the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games and beyond. She will be joined at Junior Pan Pacs by Kozell, whose swimmers have set 18 Alberta records over the past three years.<\/p>\n
