This was Ledecky\u2019s <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/katie-ledecky-to-turn-pro-continue-training-at-stanford\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">first world record of her pro career<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, and was actually the first time she has broken a world record since <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/katie-ledecky-makes-verbal-commitment-to-stanford\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">moving to train at Stanford<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> following the 2016 Rio Olympics. It was also the sixth time she had broken the record in this event in her career, with her previous best in the event coming from the 2015 World Championships in Kazan. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">And boy did she ever break it: Ledecky <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/katie-ledecky-back-to-old-ways-breaks-1500-world-record-in-season-at-1520-48\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">nearly became the first woman in history to dip under the 15:20 mark<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, dropping her 2015 record by 5 seconds and continuing to cement herself as one of the most dominant swimmers in history. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">To put her swim in perspective, Ledecky is now owns the 9 fastest performances in the 1500 freestyle in history, and is the fastest performer in history by a staggering <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">18 seconds<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. It is also a full 22 seconds faster than the last world record in the event which was set by <\/span><b>Kate Ziegler <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">back in 2007 (you can see a full list of the world record progression <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/katie-ledecky-smashes-1500-free-world-record-first-night-tyr-indianapolis-pro-swim-series\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">here<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">). <\/span><\/p>\n<div class=\"oembed-wrap\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Women&#039;s 1500 Freestyle Heat 1 - 2018 TYR Pro Swim Series\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/T9ky4T94bOM?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/div>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Ledecky was just as surprised as anyone about her world record, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/katie-ledecky-is-just-as-shocked-as-you-are-she-broke-her-1500-free-world-record-in-may\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">clearly stating after her race<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> that she wasn\u2019t expecting that despite having some of the best training of her life over the last six weeks and feeling like her confidence is \u201creally high right now.\u201d <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">But the most exciting thing about this swim is that it is only May, meaning Ledecky still has a full summer ahead of her to continue to push the boundaries on what is possible. And with the 21-year-old appearing to be firing on all cylinders (she also had the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/katie-ledecky-posts-second-fastest-400-free-in-history-new-u-s-open-record\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">second-fastest 400 free<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in history and <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/katie-ledecky-posts-807-27-800-free-erica-sullivan-goes-830-15\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">third-fastest 800 free<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in history this weekend), the only limit on what she may do this summer is what she can dream up. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span
