RYAN Lochte is now 3-1 in head-to-head swims against Michael Phelps during this meet, but 1-1 in finals events, after leading the way through the men&#039;s 200 IM semis at the 2012 U.S. Olympic Trials. <\/p>\n<p>Lochte blasted a time of 1:55.51 to shoot right past Phelps&#039; world-leading 1:56.32 from early in the year for the top time on the planet in 2012.  His effort also demolished Phelps&#039; Trials textile best of 1:56.71 from the 2004 meet in Long Beach, and now stands 15th all time in the event&#039;s history.  <\/p>\n<p>Phelps, meanwhile, nearly cleared his season best with a second-place 1:56.66 while swimming in the same heat as Lochte.  He is in line to threepeat his third career event at Trials after having become the first person ever to win three consecutive Trials titles in two different events with defenses of his 200 free and 200 fly titles this week.  <\/p>\n<p>Conor Dwyer, who made the team this week with a second place finish in the men&#039;s 400 free, won the second semifinal with a 1:58.32, while Phelps&#039; training partner Chase Kalisz qualified fourth in 1:59.66.  Austin Surhoff, who has been clearing his plate with scratches to focus on this event this week, placed fifth in 1:59.87. Peter Vanderkaay, the men&#039;s 400 free victor, qualified sixth in 2:00.33, while Kyle Whitaker (2:01.23) and Tyler Harris (2:01.51) comprised the rest of the championship heat.<\/p>\n<p>IU media relations later reported that Peter Vanderkaay had scratched the event, moving Indiana&#039;s Cody Miller into finals.
