June 29.  DEBORAH J. McDonald, who directed and produced the documentary, 50 year old FRESHMAN: Suzanne Heim-Bowen, is two-for-two.  <\/p>\n<p>The film about <a href=\"http:\/\/openwaterpedia.com\/index.php?title=Suzanne_Heim-Bowen\"target=\"_blank\">Suzanne Heim-Bowen<\/a>&#039;s obstacles and victories as a 50-year-old college swimming freshman has screened at two film festivals this year &#8211; and received awards at each.<\/p>\n<p>At the 2012 Indie Spirit Film Festival, <a href=\"http:\/\/openwaterpedia.com\/index.php?title=Deborah_McDonald\"target=\"_blank\">McDonald<\/a> won the Best Sports\/Outdoor Feature.  In May, it followed up with the Best New Film Award at the 2012 International Aquatic History Symposium &#038; Film Festival.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;<i>Suzanne&#039;s story is an inspiration to all women, whether they are 15 or 50 or 80 years old. She doesn&#039;t let physical or mental obstacles get in the way of a successful outcome. She truly believes that you don&#039;t have to feel well to do well and that&#039;s a pretty empowering perspective<\/i>,&#8221; explains <a href=\"http:\/\/openwaterpedia.com\/index.php?title=Deborah_McDonald\"target=\"_blank\">McDonald<\/a>, &#8220;<i>Like her, I&#039;m an athlete, so I know what that means in its simplest terms &#8212; blood, sweat and tears. My challenge was to capture the spirit of a champion on camera<\/i>.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>California&#039;s Diablo Valley College recruited <a href=\"http:\/\/openwaterpedia.com\/index.php?title=Suzanne_Heim-Bowen\"target=\"_blank\">Heim-Bowen<\/a> at the age of 50 to compete against swimmers 30 years her junior. The Masters Swimming Hall of Fame inductee accepted the challenge just as she accepted challenges all her life in the oceans from San Francisco to Dover.  The film documents this record-smashing season and chronicles the 30 years of open water exploits leading up to the 2009 swim season.<\/p>\n<p>With awards come more invitations.  <\/p>\n<p>&#8220;<i>I saw the <a href=\"http:\/\/openwaterpedia.com\/index.php?title=50_year_old_FRESHMAN_Suzanne_Heim-Bowen\"target=\"_blank\">film<\/a> and was moved<\/i>,&#8221; said <a href=\"http:\/\/openwaterpedia.com\/index.php?title=Rob_Butcher\"target=\"_blank\">Rob Butcher<\/a>, Executive Director of U.S. Masters Swimming who urged McDonald to screen the film at the national championships after the Olympic Trials in Omaha.  &#8220;<i>Deborah captures the heart of Suzanne in this inspirational story.
