The Friday preliminary session of the 2018 TYR Pro Swim Series meet from Indianapolis featured a lot of the national team making some noise as the usual stars\u00a0Katie Ledecky<\/strong>,\u00a0Simone Manuel\u00a0<\/strong>and\u00a0Jacob Pebley\u00a0<\/strong>swam to top seeds in Indy.<\/p>\n

Women’s 400 IM<\/h3>\n

Katie Ledecky\u00a0<\/strong>is having herself quite the meet as she already set a world record<\/a> in the 1500 and swam the second fastest time ever<\/a> in the 400. On Friday morning at the IU Natatorium in Indianapolis, she swam a 4:41.54 to lead the qualifiers in the 400 IM heats at the TYR Pro Swim Series.<\/p>\n

She swam by\u00a0Melanie Margalis\u00a0<\/strong>(4:42.87) and\u00a0Ella Eastin\u00a0<\/strong>(4:43.36) in the freestyle leg as those three are the top seeds.<\/p>\n

Penn State’s\u00a0Ally McHugh\u00a0<\/strong>(4:43.61) and\u00a0Vietnam’s\u00a0Vien Nguyen\u00a0<\/strong>(4:43.63), as well as\u00a0Hali Flickinger\u00a0<\/strong>(4:43.72),\u00a0Brooke Forde\u00a0<\/strong>(4:44.36) and\u00a0Allie Szekely\u00a0<\/strong>(4:44.85) will also swim in the A-final tonight.<\/p>\n

Men’s 400 IM<\/h3>\n

Georgia had a good showing in the heats of the 400 IM on Friday morning as\u00a0Jay Litherland\u00a0<\/strong>swam to the top seed with a 4:22.03 just ahead of Louisville’s\u00a0Daniel Sos\u00a0<\/strong>(4:22.71). Cal’s\u00a0Sean Grieshop\u00a0<\/strong>is the third seed at 4:24.18.<\/p>\n

Reigning World Champion\u00a0Chase Kalisz\u00a0<\/strong>did not take a hard stroke his last 200 as he cruised in to a very comfortable 4:24.76. He has been as fast as a 4:08 this year already so he could dip down that low tonight.<\/p>\n

Carson Foster\u00a0<\/strong>(4:25.25),\u00a0Gunnar Bentz\u00a0<\/strong>(4:25.43),\u00a0Charlie Swanson\u00a0<\/strong>(4:26.16) and\u00a0Clayton Forde\u00a0<\/strong>(4:26.79) placed in the top eight after the A-flight heats.<\/p>\n

Women’s 50 Free<\/h3>\n

Stanford’s\u00a0Simone Manuel\u00a0<\/strong>and future teammate\u00a0Taylor Ruck\u00a0<\/strong>were the only women to break 25 seconds on Friday morning at the TYR Pro Swim Series meet in Indianapolis. Manuel is the top seed for tonight at 24.89 and Ruck is the second seed at 24.99.<\/p>\n

Those two are just ahead of Mission Viejo’s\u00a0Margo Geer\u00a0<\/strong>who is\u00a0on a bit of a comeback trail<\/a>\u00a0herself. Geer is the third seed tonight with a 25.00.<\/p>\n

Kelsi Dahlia\u00a0<\/strong>(25.37),\u00a0Kayla Sanchez\u00a0<\/strong>(25.38),\u00a0Mallory Comerford\u00a0<\/strong>(25.54),\u00a0Olivia Smoliga<\/strong> (25.58) and\u00a0Veronica Burchill\u00a0<\/strong>(25.80) also placed in the top eight after the A-flight.<\/p>\n

Men’s 50 Free<\/h3>\n

NC State’s\u00a0Justin Ress\u00a0<\/strong>sprinted to the top seed in the 50 as he swam a 22.36 just ahead of Indiana’s\u00a0Ali Khalafalla\u00a0<\/strong>(22.46). Ress has been a swimmer on the rise the last 12 months after he\u00a0made the World Championship team<\/a>\u00a0last summer, won a couple gold medals<\/a> at the World University Games, and was an integral part in NC State’s relays<\/a> this past March. Ress could snag a couple relay spots later this summer as he is now a well-known name in the swimming circles.<\/p>\n

Speaking of well known names,\u00a0three-time Olympian\u00a0Nathan Adrian\u00a0<\/strong>(22.54) is the third seed going into tonight. He had a good showing\u00a0last night in the 100 free<\/a>\u00a0and could get down to a sub-22 again tonight.<\/p>\n

Aaron Greenberg\u00a0<\/strong>(22.88),\u00a0Ryan Held\u00a0<\/strong>(22.96),\u00a0Adam Chaney\u00a0<\/strong>(23.10) and\u00a0Blake Pieroni\u00a0<\/strong>(23.23)\u00a0also placed in the A-flight’s top eight.\u00a0Gus Borges\u00a0<\/strong>snuck into the A-final after a 23.21 in the B-flights. He did the same thing in the 100 free yesterday, sneaking into the A-final after swimming in the B-flight.<\/p>\n

Women’s 200 Back<\/h3>\n

Kentucky’s\u00a0Asia Seidt\u00a0<\/strong>(2:11.69) cruised to the top seed and will have a bit of a battle tonight in the 200 back final at the TYR Pro Swim Series meet at Indianapolis. Seidt is just barely ahead of\u00a0Kennedy Goss\u00a0<\/strong>(2:11.71) and\u00a0Erin Voss\u00a0<\/strong>(2:11.74).<\/p>\n

Texas A&M’s\u00a0Lisa Bratton\u00a0<\/strong>(2:12.57) is just ahead of Canadian teenage sensation\u00a0Taylor Ruck\u00a0<\/strong>(2:12.89) and US National team member\u00a0Olivia Smoliga\u00a0<\/strong>(2:13.72).<\/p>\n

Ali Galyer\u00a0<\/strong>(2:13.94) and\u00a0Allie Szekely\u00a0<\/strong>(2:14.25) round out the top eight from this morning.<\/p>\n

Men’s 200 Back<\/h3>\n

Cal’s\u00a0Jacob Pebley\u00a0<\/strong>has a chance to toot his own horn tonight without training partner and reigning Olympic champion\u00a0Ryan Murphy\u00a0<\/strong>in the field. Pebley cruised to the top time in the 200 back heats with a 1:59.67 as he was the only swimmer under two minutes in Indianapolis.<\/p>\n

Pebley is well ahead of the rest of the field as three swimmers behind him swam 2:02’s.\u00a0Grigory Tarasevich\u00a0<\/strong>(2:02.29),\u00a0Nicolas Albiero\u00a0<\/strong>(2:02.71) and\u00a0Carson Foster\u00a0<\/strong>(2:02.96) are all right there together going into tonight.<\/p>\n

Alex Boratto\u00a0<\/strong>(2:03.27),\u00a0Matt Grevers\u00a0<\/strong>(2:03.51),\u00a0Jacob Steele\u00a0<\/strong>(2:03.76) and\u00a0David Fridlander\u00a0<\/strong>(2:04.49) also placed in the top eight after the A-flight.<\/p>\n

Women’s 200 Free<\/h3>\n

Katie Ledecky\u00a0<\/strong>cruised in the heats of the 200 free which was her second event of the morning so far on this lovely Friday. Ledecky swam a 1:57.00 to have the top seed ahead of\u00a0Melanie Margalis\u00a0<\/strong>(1:57.94). Those two are head and shoulders ahead of the rest of the field as third was\u00a0Simone Manuel\u00a0<\/strong>at 1:59.47.<\/p>\n

The rest of the field is very strong as it looks like it’s going to be a very tough path to get on the 4×200 free relay at the end of the summer at the Pan Pacs in Japan.\u00a0Mallory Comerford\u00a0<\/strong>(1:59.55),\u00a0Leah Smith\u00a0<\/strong>(2:00.03),\u00a0Allison Schmitt\u00a0<\/strong>(2:00.05) and\u00a0Katie Drabot\u00a0<\/strong>(2:00.41) all have a chance to get on the team in that event at the end of the summer.<\/p>\n

Canada’s\u00a0Rebecca Smith\u00a0<\/strong>(1:59.79) is also in tonight’s A-final as the fifth seed.<\/p>\n

Men’s 200 Free<\/h3>\n

Michigan’s\u00a0Felix Aubock\u00a0<\/strong>was the only swimmer to break 1:50 on Friday morning in the heats of the 200 free at the TYR Pro Swim Series in Indianapolis. Aubock swam a 1:49.15 to lead the qualifiers into tonight’s final. He is ahead of a pair of IU swimmers\u00a0Zane Grothe\u00a0<\/strong>(1:50.03) and\u00a0Blake Pieroni\u00a0<\/strong>(1:50.06).<\/p>\n

Gunnar Bentz\u00a0<\/strong>(1:50.35) and\u00a0Norbert Szabo\u00a0<\/strong>(1:50.35) tied for fourth place.<\/p>\n

The US is desperately looking for some relay spots on the men’s side for the 4×200 free relay as they lost the last two World Championship titles to Great Britain and don’t have the luxury of\u00a0Michael Phelps\u00a0<\/strong>anymore.<\/p>\n

Guys like\u00a0Jay Litherland\u00a0<\/strong>and\u00a0Ryan Held\u00a0<\/strong>as well as Grothe, Pieroni and Bentz could help fill that void. Litherland (1:50.54) and Held (1:50.87) made it to tonight’s A-final.\u00a0Marwan El-Kamash\u00a0<\/strong>is the eighth seed after the A-flights at 1:51.17.<\/p>\n
