The first preliminary session of the 2018 TYR Pro Swim Series meet at Indianapolis kicked off from the IU Natatorium on Thursday morning.\u00a0Katie Ledecky\u00a0<\/strong>put up a pretty good 400 free swim and the crowd will be intrigued on what she can put together in finals, if she can put together\u00a0another world record<\/a>\u00a0like last night.<\/p>\n

US National Team members\u00a0Kelsi Dahlia<\/strong>,\u00a0Simone Manuel\u00a0<\/strong>and\u00a0Blake Pieroni\u00a0<\/strong>also put up the top times in their respective events during prelims.<\/p>\n

Manuel was making her professional debut as the Olympic and World Championship gold medalist cruised in the 100 free heats.<\/p>\n

Women’s 100 Fly<\/h3>\n

Kelsi Dahlia\u00a0<\/strong>got her Pro Swim Series meet started with a solid 57.67 100 fly morning swim. She is well ahead of the rest of the field as her Louisville teammate\u00a0Mallory Comerford\u00a0<\/strong>is the second seed at 59.05.<\/p>\n

Dahlia has been the premiere butterflyer in the USA since she won Olympic Trials in 2016. She is head and shoulders above the rest of the country.<\/p>\n

Canada’s\u00a0Rebecca Smith\u00a0<\/strong>is the third seed for tonight at 59.38.<\/p>\n

Amanda Kendall\u00a0<\/strong>(59.59),\u00a0Hellen Moffitt\u00a0<\/strong>(59.73),\u00a0Katie Drabot\u00a0<\/strong>(59.87),\u00a0Christie Jensen\u00a0<\/strong>(1:00.16) and\u00a0Veronica Burchill\u00a0<\/strong>(1:00.27) will also swim in the A-final tonight.<\/p>\n

Men’s 100 Fly<\/h3>\n

There’s no\u00a0Caeleb Dressel\u00a0<\/strong>and there’s no\u00a0Tim Phillips<\/strong>, the two guys who went to Budapest in the 100 fly last summer for team USA. The fastest American this year,\u00a0Jack Conger<\/strong>, is also not in attendance. The 100 fly heats were topped by versatile\u00a0Gunnar Bentz\u00a0<\/strong>of Georgia at 53.11.<\/p>\n

He was just ahead of\u00a0fellow Bulldog\u00a0Camden Murphy\u00a0<\/strong>(53.34) and Cal’s\u00a0Tom Shields\u00a0<\/strong>(53.37). It is a very tight field as\u00a0Ryan Held\u00a0<\/strong>(53.69),\u00a0Vini Lanza\u00a0<\/strong>(53.71),\u00a0Nicolas Albiero\u00a0<\/strong>(53.78),\u00a0Drew Kibler\u00a0<\/strong>(53.87) and\u00a0Zach Harting\u00a0<\/strong>(54.09) will also swim in tonight’s A-final barring any later flight swims.<\/p>\n

Women’s 400 Free<\/h3>\n

Katie Ledecky\u00a0<\/strong>returned to the pool Thursday morning with a smooth 4:02.08 to lead the 400 free heats at the TYR Pro Swim Series at Indianapolis. Ledecky is a little off her 3:56.46 world record but who knows if she will get down to that tonight. Regardless, she is well ahead of the rest of the field as\u00a0Leah Smith\u00a0<\/strong>(4:09.96) and\u00a0Hali Flickinger\u00a0<\/strong>(4:11.41) followed her in second and third.<\/p>\n

It is another tight field as the rest of the field was all within a few seconds of each other.\u00a0Ashley Neidigh\u00a0<\/strong>(4:11.96),\u00a0Katie Drabot\u00a0<\/strong>(4:12.18),\u00a0Rose Bi\u00a0<\/strong>(4:12.25),\u00a0Sierra Schmidt\u00a0<\/strong>(4:12.37) and\u00a0Erica Sullivan\u00a0<\/strong>(4:12.75) will also swim in the A-final tonight.<\/p>\n

Men’s 400 Free<\/h3>\n

Club Wolverine’s\u00a0Felix Aubock\u00a0<\/strong>had the fastest 400 free of the morning heats with a 3:52.45 as he out-touched\u00a0Marwan El Kamash\u00a0<\/strong>in his heat. El Kamash is the second seed at 3:52.68 as they are two seconds ahead of the rest of the field.<\/p>\n

Marcelo Acosta\u00a0<\/strong>(3:54.99) and\u00a0Zane Grothe\u00a0<\/strong>(3:55.15) followed them in third and fourth as they could both provide serious challenges to Aubock and El Kamash tonight.<\/p>\n

Ricardo Vargas\u00a0<\/strong>(3:55.96),\u00a0Kevin Litherland\u00a0<\/strong>(3:56.09),\u00a0Gil Kiesler\u00a0<\/strong>(3:56.26) and\u00a0Logan Houck\u00a0<\/strong>(3:56.37) also placed in the top eight this morning in Indianapolis.<\/p>\n

Women’s 200 Breast<\/h3>\n

Swimming in her first year as a post grad,\u00a0Emily Escobedo\u00a0<\/strong>must have been feeling the hype of the UMBC Retriever’s men’s basketball team this past March as Escobedo put up a very good morning swim of 2:26.43 in the 200 breast. Escobedo is ahead of two of the finalists at last summer’s World Championships\u00a0Lilly King\u00a0<\/strong>(2:28.81) and\u00a0Bethany Galat\u00a0<\/strong>(2:30.74).<\/p>\n

Breaststroke was once a weak link for the American women but has now become a very stacked field. Olympians\u00a0Molly Hannis<\/strong>,\u00a0Breeja Larson\u00a0<\/strong>and\u00a0Micah Sumrall\u00a0<\/strong>have all been swimming very well in 2018 and it will be a big fight to get on the Pan Pac team later this summer.<\/p>\n

Melanie Margalis\u00a0<\/strong>(2:28.22),\u00a0Annie Lazor\u00a0<\/strong>(2:29.58),\u00a0Allie Szekely\u00a0<\/strong>(2:31.23),\u00a0Emily Weiss\u00a0<\/strong>(2:32.30) and\u00a0Bailey Bonnett\u00a0<\/strong>(2:32.51) will also swim in the A-final tonight.<\/p>\n

Men’s 200 Breast<\/h3>\n

In a field of mostly post grad Olympians and World Championship team members, it was 18-year-old Stanford commit<\/a>\u00a0Daniel Roy\u00a0<\/strong>on top of the field in the men’s 200 breast heats. Roy swam a 2:12.40 on Thursday morning in Indianapolis at the TYR Pro Swim Series. Roy is ahead of Olympians\u00a0Chase Kalisz\u00a0<\/strong>(2:12.60) and\u00a0Cody Miller\u00a0<\/strong>(2:13.63).<\/p>\n

The rest of the field is pretty solid as well as\u00a0Nic Fink\u00a0<\/strong>(2:13.85),\u00a0Kevin Cordes\u00a0<\/strong>(2:14.91),\u00a0Marat Amaltdinov\u00a0<\/strong>(2:16.19),\u00a0Charlie Swanson\u00a0<\/strong>(2:17.46) and\u00a0Reece Whitley\u00a0<\/strong>(2:17.64) will also swim in the A-final tonight.<\/p>\n

Women’s 100 Free<\/h3>\n

Simone Manuel\u00a0<\/strong>is swimming in her first meet as a professional swimmer as the reigning World and Olympic champion swam a 54.20 on Thursday morning at the TYR Pro Swim Series in Indianapolis. Manuel is just ahead of Canadian superstar\u00a0Taylor Ruck\u00a0<\/strong>(54.35). Ruck will be joining<\/a> Manuel in Palo Alto this fall so the two will have plenty of time to get to know each other.<\/p>\n

Margo Geer\u00a0<\/strong>(54.53),\u00a0Mallory Comerford\u00a0<\/strong>(54.75) also broke 55 seconds as those two will be vying for relay spots later this summer at US Nationals for the Pan Pacific Championships in Japan.<\/p>\n

Canada’s\u00a0Kayla Sanchez\u00a0<\/strong>(54.85),\u00a0Katie Ledecky\u00a0<\/strong>(55.02),\u00a0Kelsi Dahlia\u00a0<\/strong>(55.13) and\u00a0Rebecca Smith\u00a0<\/strong>(55.42) also will swim in the A-final tonight.<\/p>\n

Men’s 100 Free<\/h3>\n

Blake Pieroni\u00a0<\/strong>cruised to the top time in the 100 free prelims with a 49.04 ahead of 2017 World Championship team member\u00a0Justin Ress\u00a0<\/strong>(49.47) of NC State. Both swimmers showed tremendous value on relays at NCAA’s in March and will be valuable pieces on relays later this summer for USA Swimming if they can make the team in August.<\/p>\n

Indiana’s\u00a0Ali Khalafalla\u00a0<\/strong>(49.60) and 2012 Olympic Gold Medalist\u00a0Nathan Adrian\u00a0<\/strong>(49.79), as well as recent Indiana transfer<\/a>\u00a0Zach Apple\u00a0<\/strong>(49.80) and NC State Olympian\u00a0Ryan Held\u00a0<\/strong>(49.88) also broke 50 seconds in Thursday morning’s heats.<\/p>\n

Aaron Greenberg\u00a0<\/b>(50.41) and\u00a0Gus Borges\u00a0<\/strong>(50.83) will also swim in the A-final tonight.<\/p>\n
