WORLD short course records fell in meets on opposite sides of the globe the last few days, with one mark being broken by two swimmers from the same country who finished in a tie.

In Rostock, Germany, Thomas Rupprath broke the world record for the 200 meter butterfly on Saturday, clocking 1:51.21. The old mark was 1:51.58 set by Frenchman Franck Esposito last January in Antibes, France.

The 24-year-old broke the record during the second day of the German short-course championships in the northern German city of Rostock. A day earlier, he set a European record for the 50 meter backstroke in 23.75.

Yesterday, China's Chen Hua broke a 14-year-old short course world record in the women's 800 meter freestyle at the World Cup IV meet in Shanghai.

The 19-year-old won the race in 8:15.15. The old record of 8:15.34 was set by East Germany's Astrid Strauss in 1987.

Chen said she had expected to break Strauss' mark.
"This world record is no surprise to me. I am in good shape and I expected to beat it.

Earlier, Chinese newcomer Li Hui smashed the world record in the women's 50 meter backstroke. Li, 16, improved her personal best by almost two full seconds to win the all-Chinese final in 26.83 in front of her home crowd. The previous world record was 27.25, set last year by the USA's Haley Cope.

Today, on the second day of the Shanghai meet, China's Luo Xuejuan and newcomer Li Wei simultaneously touched the wall in 30.56 seconds in the women's 50 meter breaststroke. Both swimmers were under Penny Heyns' world record of 30.60 from 1999.

FINA official Camillo Cametti said he believed it was the first time two swimmers had tied while breaking a world record. He was right, though a similar happening occurred two decades ago. In 1980, the USA's Bill barrett set the world and American record in the 200m (long course) IM at 2:03.24. In 1981, Canada's Alex Baumann lowered the world mark to 2:02.78. However at the 1983 US Nationals, Barrett and Steve Lundquist tied for first place. Their time: 2:03.24! Thus they not only tied for first, but they also equalled Barrett's still-standing American record from three years earlier.

RESULTS
World Cup IV
Shanghai, China
December 2-3, 2001

25 meter pool

December 2, 2001: Day One

Men's 100m freestyle
1.
