ATHENS, Ga. \u2013 Florida State\u2019s men\u2019s swimming and diving team finished fourth overall with 576 points at the 2001 Georgia Invitational, which concluded Sunday afternoon in Athens, Ga. The Seminoles had six individuals compete in their events\u2019 final heats. Sophomore Tal Stricker led the way for FSU with a second-place finish in the 200-yard breaststroke with a time of 1:59.68. The Tribe had an impressive run at the weekend-long meet by defeating two Atlantic Coast Conference squads (Clemson and Georgia Tech) and competing strongly against three nationally ranked squads: Minnesota (No. 7), Alabama (No. 17) and Georgia (No. 15).<\/p>\n
In addition to Stricker\u2019s second-place finish in the 200 breast championship final, sophomore Wickus Nienaber placed fourth at 2:01.34 and junior Justin Betts finished in fifth-place with a time of 2:01.45. Junior Nnamnse Ammons turned in a third-place finish for the Seminoles in the 100-yard freestyle final, touching the wall at 45.23. In the 100 free consolation final, freshman Michael Averett finish third (45.67) and junior Matt Carmen came in fifth-place (46.00).<\/p>\n
Sophomore Matt Wheeler competed in the 200 butterfly final, placing fourth with a time of 1:50.08. In diving action, freshman Louie Gagnet placed fourth with a score of 432.05 on the platform event final. The Seminoles placed two relay squads in the top eight in the 400-yard free relay. <\/p>\n
The relay team of Carmen, Ammons, Averett and junior Joey Marshburn placed second with a time of 3:00.63, while sophomore Michael Paulus, junior Devin Crock, Stricker and Nienaber finished eighth (3:04.64). In consolation final action, freshman Chris Lang place seventh in the 200 backstroke at 1:54.01. <\/p>\n
The invitational was won by Minnesota with a score of 1,018.5. Rounding out the top three was Alabama at 672.5 and Georgia with 613 points.<\/p>\n
