The women's 800 free kicked off the final night of swimming, with Denmark's Lotte Friis pulling away to win in 8:22.10. South Africa's Wendy Trott led through the first 200 meters but faded to second in 8:25.71. Friis' time ranks second this year behind Rebecca Adlington's 8:18.54, while Trott is now fifth. Italy's Martina de Memme finished a distant third in 8:36.67.<\/p>\n
Ryosuke Irie of Japan established a new meet record in the men's 200 back, posting a time of 1:55.05 for the win. That time falls about a second off his top-ranked swim of 1:54.02 from January. Radoslaw Kawecki of Poland touched second in 1:57.62 while Brazil's Leonardo de Deus was third in 1:58.79. Japan's Aya Terakawa followed suit with another championship record of 2:07.73 in the women's 200 back, the third fastest time this year. Anastasia Zueva of Russia touched second in 2:09.27 while Italy's Alessia Filippi, the Italian record holder, placed third in 2:11.59.<\/p>\n
Meet records continued to fall as Germany's Marco Koch recorded a 2:08.74 to win the men's 200 breast, just in front of Japan's Ryo Tateishi (2:08.85). Koch's time ranks fourth in the world this year, while Tateishi already had the second best time at 2:08.17 from April. Italy's Flavio Bizzarri placed third in 2:12.76. In the women's 200 breast, Denmark's Rikke Moller Pedersen stretched her lead over the final 50 meters to win in 2:24.35, ahead of Kanako Watanabe of Japan (2:25.54) and Elisa Celli of Italy (2:27.90). <\/p>\n
The men's 100 free race featured an extremely close finish, as all eight finalists finished within less than eight tenths of a second. Sebastian Verschuren of The Netherlands got his hand on the wall first at 49.09, one one-hundredth ahead of Cuba's Hanser Garcia (49.10). Fabien Gilot of France touched right behind in 49.12. <\/p>\n
Italy's Federica Pellegrini, who had an incredible world championships in 2009 in this same pool, earned another win in the women's 200 free with a 1:56.32, her fastest time of 2012 and the sixth fastest overall. Femke Heemskerk of The Netherlands had a sizeable lead throughout the race but slipped to second with a 1:57.15. Sweden's Sarah Sjostrom placed third in 1:58.08.<\/p>\n
Gregorio Paltrinieri of Italy dipped under the 15-minute mark in the men's 1500 free, winning in a time of 14:58.33. Paltrinieri swam much quicker in May, posting a 14:48.92 at the European Championships. Italy swept the top three places with Gabriele Detti (15:02.45) and Samuel Pizzetti (15:16.32) in second and third. <\/p>\n
The women's and men's 200 IM closed out the competition. Izumi Kato of Japan topped the women's field with a 2:13.64, ahead of Italy's Stefania Pirozzi (2:15.24) and Erica Buratto (2:15.78). Brazil's Thiago Pereira ended the meet on a great note with a championship record time of 1:57.94, just off his third-ranked time of 1:57.11 from April.
