ROME, Italy, June 15. AYA Terakawa of Japan and Ranomi Kromowidjojo of The Netherlands swam impressive races during the second day of competition at the Sette Colli meet in Rome, while Italy's Luca Marin also posted a new championship record in the men's 400 IM. <\/p>\n
Yesterday, Martina Granstroem of Sweden finished third in the women's 100 fly. Today, she moved up two places with a win in the 200 fly. Granstroem touched in 2:08.85, almost a second ahead of Poland's Otylia Jedrzejczak, who finished in 2:09.73. Switzerland's Martina van Berkel placed third in the event at 2:10.53. In the men's 200 fly, South Africa's Chad Le Clos earned his second victory in two days with a 1:55.87, just off his top time of 1:55.30 from April. Kazuya Kaneda of Japan placed second in 1:57.67, just in front of Italy's Francesco Pavone (1:57.71).<\/p>\n
Japan's Aya Terakawa made a statement in the women's 100 back, cracking the 1:00-mark and winning by nearly a full second in 59.42. Terakawa has already been a 59.08 this year, which she swam at the Japan Open in May. Anastasia Zueva of Russia, who owns the fastest time this year at 58.97, finished second in 1:00.35. Italy's Elena Gemo just missed the Italian record of 1:00.26 with a third place effort of 1:00.75. Ryosuke Irie kept the ball rolling for Japan after out-touching European record-holder Camille Lacourt in the men's 100 back. Irie finished in 53.71 to Lacourt's 53.77. Both swimmers have been under 53 this season, with Lacourt at 52.75 and Irie at 52.91. The Netherlands' Nick Driebergen picked up third in 54.53. <\/p>\n
Miyu Otsuka of Japan topped the women's 400 IM with the only sub-4:40 swim, a 4:38.73. Italy's Stefania Pirozzi posted a 4:40.88 to finish second while Japan's Izumi Kato placed third in 4:41.82. Italy's Luca Marin set a new championship record in the men's race with a 4:12.04, which ranks sixth in the world this year. Japan's Kosuke Hagino led the race early but fell behind on breaststroke before his comeback bid came up short and he finished a close second in 4:12.46. Italy's Federico Turrini took third in 4:16.18.<\/p>\n
Ranomi Kromowidjojo of The Netherlands earned her second win in as many days with a dominant performance in the women's 100 free. Kromowidjojo posted a 53.09 for the win, a new championship record and the second fastest of 2012 behind her own 52.75 from April. Sweden's Sarah Sjostrom finished a distant second in 54.30, followed by fellow countrywoman Therese Alshammar at 54.45. <\/p>\n
