BRITISH Swimming announced today that Daniel Sliwinski will not participate in the Olympics due to a persistent shoulder injury.<\/p>\n<p>The 22-year-old has had issues with a shoulder tendon injury and will have an operation next week, according to British Swimming.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;It is an athlete&#039;s worst nightmare,&#8221; Sliwinski said in British Swimming&#039;s announcement. &#8220;I have had a couple of injuries and I need to go back and rebuild the foundations. I am still young enough to think about Rio 2016, but I need to address this injury before it gets worse. I still want to swim for as long as I am physically able to and this operation will help with that. The important thing I need to focus on now is my recovery.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Sliwinski <a href=http:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/lane9\/news\/World\/29871.asp>won the 100 breast<\/a> at the British Olympic Trials in March in 1:00.09, which was then the fastest time in the world. That time has now fallen to seventh in the world rankings. The top swimmer now for Great Britain in the event will be Craig Benson, who finished second at Trials with a FINA A standard time of 1:00.47.<\/p>\n<p>British Swimming is looking to fill the open spot in the 100 breast at next week&#039;s national championships, which is a second-chance opportunity for many British swimmers to claim a spot in several events that do not have two automatic qualifiers. Additional swimmers may be placed in individual events, provided they swim faster than the FINA A standard in the event.<\/p>\n<p>Event start lists have not been released for nationals, but Michael Jamieson is one of many likely candidates for that open roster spot in the 100 breast. He finished third in the event at Trials with a 1:00.50, just .03 slower than the FINA A standard. Jamieson is already on the Olympic roster in the 200 breaststroke by virtue of <a href=http:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/lane9\/news\/World\/29904.asp>his second-place finish in the 200 breast<\/a> at the March Trials.<\/p>\n<p>According to British Swimming, roster spots are open in 11 other events.
