ATHENS, Ga. \u2013 At the completion of the second day of competition at the 2001 Georgia Invitational, Florida State University\u2019s men\u2019s and women\u2019 swimming and diving teams are both in third-place. The women competed in six finals Saturday evening, picking up valuable team points for a two-day total of 390.5. The Lady Seminoles, who received votes in the latest national poll, trail No. 2 Georgia (580) and No. 17 Northwestern (405), and they are ahead of No. 18 Alabama (354), No. 21 Michigan (336) and No. 22 Minnesota (317.5). The men competed in three finals, and ended the day with a score of 413. The Seminoles trail No. 7 Minnesota (687) and No. 17 Alabama (494) and lead No. 15 Georgia (405).<\/p>\n
In women\u2019s action, the first final the Lady Seminoles competed in was the 200-yard medley relay. The relay team of Emily Breen, Emma Dutton, Candice Nethercott and Christy Cech touched the wall at 1:44.11, good enough for sixth-place. Nethercott competed in the first individual final for the women, placing sixth in the 100 butterfly at 55.70. <\/p>\n
Cech placed seventh in the 200-yard freestyle with a time of 1:51.48. In the women\u2019s 100 breaststroke, Dutton finished eighth, touching the wall at 1:03.53. In women\u2019s diving action, Chelsie Lerew placed second on the on the three-meter board with a score of 484.8 for her 11 dives. Courtney McClow was also impressive on the three-meter, finishing third (458.55).<\/p>\n
In the final event for the women, the 800 free relay, the Lady Seminoles placed two relay squads in the top eight. The team of Loren Hansen, Cech, Breen and Amy Lo finished in sixth-place with a time of 7:31.32. The relay squad of Christie Pesce, Angie Leach, Golda Marcus and Betsy Nagy placed eighth at 7:36.59.<\/p>\n
In men\u2019s action, the 200 medley relay team of Devin Crock, Justin Betts, Michael Averett and Nnamnse Ammons touched the wall at 1:30.46 for a fourth-place finish. Crock later placed eighth in the 100-yard butterfly with a time of 49.44. Wickus Nienaber had the best finish for the men, placing second in the 100 breast, only three-hundredths of a second behind first-place finisher Jeff Hackler of Minnesota, with a time of 54.86. Diver Louie Gagnet was the final top-eight finisher for the Seminoles in Day Two action. Gagnet placed third on the one-meter board with a score of 284.65.<\/p>\n
The final day of competition for the Georgia Invitational is set to begin on Sunday, December 2, with preliminary heats at 9:30 a.m. and finals are scheduled for a 3 p.m. start.
