LAUSANNE, Switzerland, June 14. SERBIA's Milorad Cavic and Zimbabwe's Kirsty Coventry are among 21 candidates who are vying to fill four upcoming opening on the International Olympic Committee's Athletes Commission. Olympic athletes will vote on these candidates during the Olympic Games, and results will be announced on August 9.<\/p>\n
The Commission, which meets one to two times per year, serves as a consultative body and is the link between active athletes and the IOC. It is composed of 12 athletes (8 summer and 4 winter)elected for eight years by the athletes participating in the Olympic Games, and of up to seven athletes appointed by the IOC President, to ensure a balance between regions, genders and sports. In addition, a representative of the World Olympians Association (WOA) and a representative of the International Paralympic Committee (IPC) are ex-officio members. <\/p>\n
What the Athletes' Commission does:<\/b>
\n* Makes recommendations to and participates in the IOC's main commissions and working groups
\n* Works in liaison with the athletes' commissions of the National Olympic Committees (NOCs) and International Federations (IFs), Continental Associations, International Paralympic Committee (IPC) and World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA).
\n* Participates in the Olympic Games candidate city evaluation process
\n* Raises awareness among athletes of all categories in the fight against doping
\n* Oversees the IOC Athlete Career Programme (education, life skills and employment)
\n* Encourages women to take leadership positions in sports administration
\n* Promotes a healthy environment for everyone<\/p>\n

Milorad Cavic:
\n“It is my greatest honour to submit my candidacy for becoming a member of the IOC Athletes' Commission.<\/p>\n
It would be a great pleasure to be in a position to represent the interests of the athletes worldwide, to encourage the development of sports ethics, fight against doping in sports and to support all the athletes to enhance their education and life skills.<\/p>\n
It is a great responsibility that I am willing to take because I find the issues that the Athletes' Commission is working on of most importance for the active career of each athlete.<\/p>\n
I strongly believe that I could use my experience towards achievement and implementation of the Olympic spirit and the Olympic movement.<\/p>\n
It was always my great satisfaction to help and to be involved in the activities of promoting sports and the Olympic Values in my country. Membership of the IOC Athletes' Commission would give me a position to get involved in sports diplomacy and support the interests of sports and the athletes worldwide in various ways.”<\/p>\n
Kirsty Coventry:
\n“I want to be part of the Athletes' Commission to make sure athletes from all walks of life are represented fairly. Being an athlete from Zimbabwe, a country where our sports are well participated but unfortunately underfunded, I understand the daily struggles and hard work that goes into being a successful athlete.<\/p>\n
