RICCIONE, Italy, June 11. SIX world records fell during the second day of racing at the 2012 FINA World Masters Championships in Riccione, Italy.<\/p>\n
The swimming portion of the championships began yesterday with the men's and women's 800 freestyles, and while no world records fell in either event, Italy's Lorenzo Marugo came extremely close, missing the men's 60-64 world record by .43 with a championship record of 9:55.71.<\/p>\n
The first world record of the competition came today in the men's 50-54 200 back, as the United States' Michael Soderlund swam a 2:17.57 to dip under the previous time of 2:17.74, set by Jamie Fowler in 2009.<\/p>\n
South Africa's Chris King took down the men's 25-29 200 back world record with a 2:03.62, just under the old mark of 2:03.80 held by Germany's Kamil Kasprowicz.<\/p>\n
In the women's 65-69 100 breast, Croatia's Giurgiza Gabrilo set a new world standard with a time of 1:30.16, annihilating the previous record of 1:33.23, set by Japan's Nobuko Yasuda in 2010. <\/p>\n
Italy's Monica Coro established a new world record in the women's 50-54 100 breast with a 1:15.50, two seconds under her own record of 1:17.84 from February and seven seconds ahead of the second place finisher in the event.<\/p>\n
American Timothy Shead took down the men's 60-64 100 breast record, posting a 1:14.32 to knock off Robert's Strand's 1:15.42 from 2008.<\/p>\n
Another record tumbled in the men's 40-44 100 breast, at the hands of Russia's Vladislav Bragin. Bragin swam a 1:04.40 to lower his own record of 1:04.86 from last year.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
