On May 4, the Gwangju 2019 committee announced the mascot for the games via their Twitter account:<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-lang=\"en\">\n<p dir=\"ltr\" lang=\"en\">We chose to have otters as <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/hashtag\/symbol?src=hash&amp;ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">#symbol<\/a> for the <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/hashtag\/Championships?src=hash&amp;ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">#Championships<\/a>! Why? The otter swims freely in the water and symbolizes swimmers&#8217; passion for <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/hashtag\/challenge?src=hash&amp;ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">#challenge<\/a>. <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/hashtag\/Gwangju2019?src=hash&amp;ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">#Gwangju2019<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/hashtag\/Diveintopeace?src=hash&amp;ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">#Diveintopeace<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/LltCtBjpHd\">pic.twitter.com\/LltCtBjpHd<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u2014 Gwangju2019 (@Gwangju2019_) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/Gwangju2019_\/status\/992341933757489152?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">May 4, 2018<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><script async src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script><\/p>\n<p>The otter swims right on track with the slogan of the games, &#8220;Dive Into Peace.&#8221; According to the event <a href=\"http:\/\/www.fina-gwangju2019.com\/menu\/70\/view.do\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">website<\/a><span style=\"color: #000000;\">,\u00a0the saying was developed in hopes of enhancing human peace in the city. The website also further explained the choice of otters as mascots:<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"color: #008000;\">&#8220;The mascot of the 2019 Gwangju FINA World Championships is the otter, a flagship species of Mt. Mudeungsan that has returned to the Yeongsangang River of Gwangju. The otter swimming freely in the water symbolizes the swimmers&#8217; passion for challenge and promotes the \u201cspirits of peace\u201d to the citizens of the world enjoying the harmonious festival.&#8221;<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>The theme of peace is consistent throughout all elements of the Championships.
