CANET, France, June 7. THE second and final day of the Canet stop of the Mare Nostrum series is in the books, as France's Camille Muffat recorded another blistering swim, this time in the women's 400 free.<\/p>\n
Muffat, who set a new textile best yesterday in the 200 free, negative split the 400 free en route to a winning time of 4:02.97, a new meet record. Muffat took the race out in 2:04.43 and brought it home nearly six seconds faster, in 1:58.54. She already holds the fastest time in the world this year at 4:01.13. Canada's Barbara Jardin finished well behind in 4:09.46, a tenth in front of Spain's Melanie Costa Schmid (4:09.56). <\/p>\n
Great Britain's Amy Smith captured the women's 100 free title in 54.96, two-tenths in front of Australia's Michelle Coleman (55.15). Charlotte Bonnet of France finished third in 55.21. On the men's side, Cuba's Hanser Garcia raced to the win in 48.89, while Canada's Brent Hayden finished in 49.00. Yannick Agnel of France touched third in 49.02. <\/p>\n
Devon Brown of South Africa doubled up in the men's distance freestyle events, winning the men's 1500 free in 15:27.67 over China's Wei Haobo (15:32.24). Spaniard Marc Sanchez swam a 15:37.14 for third place.<\/p>\n
In the women's 200 back, Great Britain's Lizzie Simmonds took command of the race and pulled away to win in 2:08.94, just over a second off her fifth-ranked time of 2:07.92 from February. Femke Heemskerk of The Netherlands finished second in 2:12.25 while South Africa's Karin Prinsloo wound up third in 2:12.68. The men's 200 back went to Cuba's Pedro Medel, as he out-touched French record-holder Benjamin Stasiulis, 2:00.34 to 2:00.38. Russia's Andrei Shabasov took third in 2:01.39.<\/p>\n
An exciting race ensued in the women's 100 breast, as the top three swimmers touched within .1 of each other. Sweden's Joline Hostman got her hands on the wall first in 1:09.44, with China's He Yuzhe (1:09.51) and Sweden's Rebecca Ejdervik (1:09.54) right behind. Brazil's Felipe Lima won the men's race in 1:00.70, not far off his eighth-ranked time of 1:00.11 from April. France's Giacomo Perez Dortona took second in 1:02.04 while Iceland's Jakob Johann Sveinsson placed third in 1:02.19.<\/p>\n
Martina Granstrom of Sweden posted the fastest time in the women's 200 fly at 2:08.96, slightly slower than her 13th ranked time of 2:08.22 from the European Championships last month. France's Lara Grangeon touched in 2:10.55 for second, followed by Canada's Audrey Lacroix in 2:11.05. <\/p>\n
South Africa's Chad Le Clos put the hammer down in the men's 200 fly, swimming a 1:55.46 for the victory. That time ranks seventh in the world this year, though Le Clos has already swam a fifth-ranked 1:55.30. Kaio Almeida of Brazil finished in 1:56.10, while France's Jordan Coelho took third in 1:58.73. <\/p>\n
The men's and women's 50 back and 50 fly also were contested today. Australia's Sophie Edington topped the women's 50 back field in 28.57, with Great Britain's Lizzie Simmonds (28.62) and France's Cloe Credeville (29.28) in second and third. France's Camille Lacourt established a new meet record in winning the men's 50 back in 24.94, just .02 ahead of Australia's Ben Treffers (24.96). The Netherlands' Inge Dekker won the women's 50 fly by a sizeable margin, 25.64 to 26.35 over Norway's Ingvild Snildal. Australia's Marieke Guehrer took third in 26.57.
