THE United States men&#039;s water polo team was officially announced this morning in a ceremony in Los Angeles. Many of the athletes on the squad competed in the 2008 Olympics, where the US won silver behind Hungary. The men are riding a wave of confidence, as they beat the very powerful Croatian team last weekend in a tournament in Pasadena, California. According to USA Water Polo, it was the first time the Americans have beaten Croatia since 2008, which happened at the Olympics. With the Olympic roster finalized, the team now prepares for the world league super final later this month in Kazakhstan, the final tournament before the Olympics. <i>Editor&#039;s note: The official Olympic roster was not announced today, but rather a list of the athletes who are provisionally approved to compete.<\/i><\/p>\n<p>Ryan Murphy got a big boost of confidence last night at the Gator Invite, beating Ryan Lochte in the 100 backstroke with a 54.98, just two hundredths of a second off his 15-16 age group national record that he set in March. Murphy will be in the 200 backstroke today. Lochte is swimming mostly off-events at this meet, including a 1:03 in the 100 breast and 54.4 in the 100 fly.<\/p>\n<p>Swimming World would like to wish Alice Tait all the best in her new chapter in life, as she made an official announcement yesterday that she is retiring from swimming. Tait was an Olympian for Australia under the name Alice Mills in 2004, where she won two golds in the 400 free relay and 400 medley relay, and in 2008, where she got bronze in the 400 free relay. Tait attempted to make the 2012 team, but finished fifth in the 100 fly and 50 free.
