CHANGSHU, China, June 2. THE U.S. Olympic Women's Water Polo Team continued their winning streak at the FINA World League Super Final as they edged Greece 7-6 in the semifinal round. The victory sends Team USA to the Gold Medal game where they will take on Australia on Sunday. Courtney Mathewson (Anaheim Hills, CA\/UCLA\/NYAC) and Kami Craig (Santa Barbara, CA\/USC\/Santa Barbara WPF) each scored two goals in the win while Betsey Armstrong (Ann Arbor, MI\/Michigan\/NYAC) posted seven saves in net. <\/p>\n
The two squads were evenly matched throughout with Greece taking a 3-2 lead after the first period and holding a 5-4 lead at halftime. The third quarter proved the difference for the United States as they outscored Greece 3-0 to take a 7-5 lead going to the final period. In the fourth neither team could get it going offensively with Greece mustering just one score to close within 7-6. They would get no closer as the United States came away with the win. <\/p>\n
“Greece made us earn this win,” said USA Head Coach Adam Krikorian. “We showed great composure in the second half.”<\/p>\n
Team USA earned the win despite struggling on power plays going 0\/6 while Greece was 1\/3. Neither team attempted a penalty shot. The match against Australia in the final will be a rematch of the championship game from the VISA Water Polo International last month in London, England, a match won by the Aussies.<\/p>\n
