AUSTIN, Texas, June 1. ALLISON Schmitt posted the first sub-54 swim in the 100 free by an American woman this year as the Longhorn Aquatics Elite Invite kicked off in Austin. Michael Phelps also put on a show with a dominating performance in the men's 100 fly. <\/p>\n
Schmitt got the meet off to a rousing start with a 53.94 for the win, the ninth best time in the world this year. Athens Bulldog's Megan Romano touched second in 54.16, in front of Colorado Stars' Missy Franklin (54.73). Competing in his home pool, Longhorn's Jimmy Feigen raced to the fastest time in the men's 100 free with a 48.63, a new personal best. North Baltimore's Michael Phelps turned in a second-place time of 49.05, while George Bovell of Club Wolverine also cracked the 50-second mark with a 49.84. <\/p>\n
Laura Sogar, who competes for the University of Texas collegiately, recorded the fastest time in the women's 200 breast at 2:27.26. North Baltimore's Annie Zhu finished three seconds back in 2:30.16, followed by St. Petersburg's Melanie Margalis (2:33.69). Longhorn's Brendan Hansen continued his road toward another Olympic berth with a win in the 200 breast in 2:13.54. Hansen's top time this year is a 2:11.74 from the Charlotte UltraSwim Grand Prix last month. Jack Brown of Mizzou took second in 2:16.72, while Nitro's Will Licon was third (2:16.79). <\/p>\n
Sarah Henry, competing unattached, pulled away from the field on the final 100 on her way to a winning time of 4:09.16 in the women's 400 free. Athens Bulldog's Amber McDermott faded to second with a 4:10.40, while her teammate Wendy Trott swam a 4:12.55 for third. Matt Patton of Club Wolverine won the men's race in 3:51.07, in front of Badger's Ryan Feeley (3:52.14) and Club Wolverine's Connor Jaeger (3:52.94). <\/p>\n
Longhorn's Kathleen Hersey, a 2008 Olympian in the 200 fly, won the shorter distance tonight in 58.76, the only swimmer in the field to break 1:00. DU Hilltoppers' Kelly Naze finished second in 1:00.30, ahead of Ellen Lobb's 1:00.88. Michael Phelps looks to be right on track for Trials in a few weeks after posting a 52.02 to win the men's 100 fly. That took .21 off his top time of 2012 from the Indianapolis Grand Prix and moved him into a tie for ninth in the world with Great Britain's Michael Rock.
