SWIMMING South Africa hasn&#039;t named its Olympic roster yet, but that didn&#039;t stop the country from giving a couple of its top swimmers a big gala send-off yesterday in Johannesburg. Cameron van der Burgh and Chad Le Clos attended a party that also featured the country&#039;s sports minister before boarding a plane to Europe, where they and other South Africans will compete in the Mare Nostrum series for a few weeks before hunkering down for a training camp in Monaco in the final weeks before the Olympics. Roland Schoeman, Wendy Trott and Darian Townsend are still training in the United States and will join their teammates in Europe soon.<\/p>\n<p>Norwegian swimming was dealt a big blow earlier this week when swimmers returned home after the European championships, only to find their training facilities closed indefinitely as a worker&#039;s strike grips the city of Bergen. More than a dozen swimmers are still in training, attempting to qualify for the London Olympics, and are preparing for the Dutch Open in a couple of weeks. Head coach Finn Zachariassen said a week out of the pool could be &#8220;fatal&#8221; for preparation.<\/p>\n<p>The American women&#039;s water polo team is barreling through the opening rounds of the FINA World League Super Final this week in Changshu, China. They started off with a 10-6 win over the host country, then today were victorious 8-4 in a match against Greece. Team USA is going for its fourth straight super final gold medal as they prepare to win their first Olympic gold medal in the 12-year history of the Games.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>PHOENIX, Arizona, May 30.
