Brazil\u2019s National Championships, the 2018 Maria Lenk Trophy, started tonight and will continue for the next five days in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. The meet will serve as the country\u2019s qualifier for the 2018 Pan Pacific Championships, the 2018 South American Swimming Championships, 2018 Summer Youth Olympics. <\/span><\/p>\n

The night started off with a South American and Brazilian record for <\/span>Fernando Scheffer<\/b> in the men\u2019s 400 freestyle. Scheffer bested the rest of the field by nearly 1.5 seconds to take the win and the record with a 3:49.06. <\/span>Vini Lanza<\/b>, who is coming off an incredible NCAA season at Indiana, was just a few tenths off the Brazilian record in the men\u2019s 100 fly with his winning time of 51.42. <\/span><\/p>\n

Daynara Paula <\/b>was the only woman to clear 59 seconds in the women\u2019s 100 fly, winning that event in a 58.67. Lithuanian Ruta Meilutyte was the top finisher in the women\u2019s 100 breast, winning a tight final in 1:07.35. In second was <\/span>Marcarena Ceballos<\/b> (1:07.76) followed closely by <\/span>Julia Sebastian<\/b> (1:07.93). <\/span>Joao Gomez <\/b>was the only swimmer under 1:00 in the men\u2019s 100 breaststroke with his winning time of 59.98, just ahead of Brazilian record holder <\/span>Felipe Silva <\/b>(1:00.26).<\/span><\/p>\n

In his first swim of the meet, Olympic gold medalist <\/span>Cesar Cielo<\/b> led off the Pinheiro 400 free relay in a 49.29, helping the team to go on to a win with a final time of 3:14.31. You can see a list of the top three finishers from the first night of meet below:<\/span><\/p>\n
