VANCOUVER, British Columbia, May 26. THREE meet records fell during the second night of finals in Vancouver, highlighted by Tae Hwan Park’s second-ranked time in the men’s 400 free. <\/p>\n
Queensland’s Yolane Kukla jumpstarted the second night of finals with a win in the 100 fly. She touched in 59.02, just ahead of Vancouver’s Noemie Thomas (59.45). Kendra Chernoff of U of A slipped into third with a 1:00.84 clocking. Jake Tapp of Langley Olympians earned a narrow victory in the men’s race, 55.36 to 55.80 over David Dimitrov of Liquid Lightning. Thane Maudslien of King Aquatic Club took third in 56.20.<\/p>\n
Sixteen-year-old Hannah Weiss emerged from a young field to win the women’s 50 back in 30.15. Oregon City’s Laura Laderoute, 14, took second in 30.53, while Team Manitoba’s Mackenzie Glover placed third in 30.60. South Australian Sports Institute’s Hayden Stoeckel took down the first meet record of the night with a 25.20 showing in the men’s 50 back, under the previous record of 25.50, held by Daniel Arnamnart. Queensland’s Mitchell Larkin touched a second back in 26.19, while Vancouver’s Kelly Aspinall wound up third in 27.41.<\/p>\n
Bronte Barratt took home her second individual event of the weekend with a dominating swim in the women’s 400 free. She turned in a time of 4:07.47, nearly seven seconds better than Vancouver’s Savannah King (4:14.16). Queensland’s Meagan Nay touched third in 4:14.42. Korea’s Tae Hwan Park crushed the field in the men’s 400 free by ten seconds, winning in 3:44.22, six seconds under the old meet record. That time ranks second in the world behind Sun Yang’s 3:42.31 from April. Queensland’s Ryan Napoleon took second in 3:54.20, and Island Swimming’s Keegan Zanatta was third in 3:56.00.<\/p>\n
Stephanie Rice of Queensland doubled up in the IM events with a commanding 2:12.51 win in the 200. University of Calgary’s Erica Morningstar touched in 2:15.43 for second, while Kim Williams of Bellevue Club took third in 2:18.08. In the men’s IM, Queensland’s Mitchell Larkin dipped under the meet record of 2:01.81 with a 2:01.73. Etobicoke’s Bogda Knezevic placed second in 2:03.90 while Langley Olympians’ Jake Tapp got third in 2:06.95. <\/p>\n
Two swimmers cracked the 26-second mark in the women’s 50 free, but it was Team Manitoba’s Chantal VanLandeghem who got there first in 25.75. Yolane Kukla settled for second in 25.78, while the University of Calgary’s Amanda Reason grabbed third in 26.36. Vancouver’s Brent Hayden came out on top in a close men’s race, 22.76 to 22.89 over Tae Hwan Park. Club Wolverine’s Barry Murphy took third in 22.99. <\/p>\n
Vancouver’s Martha McCabe just missed Annamay Pierse’s meet record of 2:25.65 in the 200 breast, but her time of 2:25.81 still topped the rest of the field. Oakville’s Tera Van Beilen finished in 2:27.93. Third went to Liquid Lightning’s Kierra Smith (2:30.44). Vancouver’s Scott Dickens earned his second win of the weekend with a new meet record in the men’s 200 breast (2:13.80). Mike Brown held the previous record at 2:14.31.
