SOMERS, Wisconsin, May 21. STEF Kerska and Matt Ense have been named Assistant Coach of the Year by CollegeSwimming.com. Ense, of Denison University was named the top Rising Assistant Coach of the Year while Kerska, from the University of Michigan was recognized in the Lifetime\/Career Category. <\/p>\n
Ense helped assemble the teams that have won back-to-back NCAA Division III Swimming and Diving titles. In doing so and snapped Kenyon College's string of thirty-one consecutive NCAA Championships. <\/p>\n
“The swimmers that he helped enroll at Denison,” explained Head Coach Gregg Parini, “have contributed approximately 76% of our team's points at NCAAs over the past three years.” — a major contribution to our men securing back-to-back national titles. Ense was the only nominee to be listed on every ballot.<\/p>\n
Kerska has been the longtime assistant to Jim Richardson at Michigan. As Richardson's assistant she's proven to be at her best when times were the worst. Richardson, who recently announced his retirement following 27 seasons in Ann Arbor explained, “Our program went through some very traumatic internal issues in the mid 90's. I could not have found a better person to share the responsibility of developing young women.” In 2001, Kerska stepped in to lead the Wolverines when illness kept Richardson from attending the Big Ten Championships. <\/p>\n
In addition to the two selections, CollegeSwimming.com also announced Honorable Mention Finalists in both the Rising and Career Assistant Coach-of-the-Year
\nhonors. Finalists in the Established\/Career Category included Suzanne Yee (Princeton University), Rob Lias (US Naval Academy), and Matt Tallman (Notre Dame). Rising assistant finalists were Danielle Korman (Johns Hopkins University) and Andy Kershaw (Southern Methodist). <\/p>\n
