FORT LAUDERDALE, Florida. May 16. RALPH Goto, the Ocean Safety Administrator of the Ocean Safety and Lifeguard Services Division of the City & County of Honolulu in Hawaii, received the prestigious Paragon Award for Water Safety at the International Swimming Hall of Fame this past weekend.<\/p>\n
Sponsored by Paragon Aquatics, Goto was recognized for his lifetime devotion and outstanding contributions in the area of water safety which includes providing lifeguard services and oversight to dozens of ocean swims, triathlons, surfing contest and other marine events on Oahu over the course of his three-decade career.<\/p>\n
Goto is responsible for the nearly US$9 million budget and operations of the year-round, professional ocean lifeguard service on Oahu. The division employs a full-time staff of 155 water safety officers and 70 part-time lifeguards who provide protective services at Oahu’s most popular and high-risk beaches. <\/p>\n
“The annual Paragon Awards bring some of the most interesting and fascinating people each year to the Hall of Fame,” said International Swimming Hall of Fame President Bruce Wigo. “These are the unsung heroes who make who save lives, promote water safety and further aquatic education.”<\/p>\n
“I have known Ralph since the mid-1980s,” recalled Steven Munatones. “He always has a kind word and smile for everyone, either on the beach or at the office, but the professionalism and preparation that goes behind the scenes is second to none. He and his team of lifeguards at the City & County of Honolulu are the individuals who have rightly earned the respect of everyone who enters the waters of Oahu.”<\/p>\n
